Thieves Guild (Will lacking Pickpocketing hurt me?)

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:01 am

I have a planned Marksmen/Thief that will lack pickpocketing perks.

Will I be at a disadvantage when doing missions for the Thieves Guild?

Also any info on the Thieves guild would be cool. :3

I'm sure that will hold you back a little. Pickpocketing is a pretty big thieving trait.

In Morrowind, in order to advance in a guild status, you did not have to finish all the quests given to you by your guild members, and could pretty much choose what branches of the quests you liked to continue.

Whenever you could not finish a quest, or did not wan to, you could ask for quest in that guild and ignore the previous one, and this worked.

Hope this is the case in Skyrim as well.

I would strongly recommend pickpocketing perks for your character, at the expense of lock picking skills.

And why is that?

You don't have to max Pickpocket perk tree to be effective as a thief. I suppose, that Keymaster perk will be most usefull for completing Thieves Guild quests.

Why...wouldn't you get pickpocketing? That and lockpicking are two of, if not THE most important skills for a thief.

Aside from Quick Hands and maybe the "pickpocket equipped items" one, Lockpick and Pickpocket perks seem to mostly make things you can do slightly easier.

I never bothered pickpocketing in Oblivion because A, nobody ever had crap on them worth a sheet, and B, even with high agility it seemed like I'd get caught most the time. What is the point? Most NPC's have very little values on them, the good loot was in rich people's houses you just steal. Am I missing something?

Some thieves specialize in pickpockets some don't. I also hope that pickpocket is not needed for playing as it's one of the skill I will never, ever touch.

You'll need at least Pickpocket or Lockpicking. Having both would help, but I think you should be ok with one. I'd actually say that Lockpicking is generally more important for a Thief. Breaking into a house and stealing stuff when no one is around is less risky than pickpocketing, since you are stealing from someone directly when you pickpocket, so more chance to get caught. Also an NPC would likely keep valuables in their home rather than on themselves.

Pickpocketing will help, but isn't 100% necessary to complete the Thieves Guild.

Also: just some info on the Thieves Guild like you asked.

Spoiler
It's in Riften, so I'd try there first if you plan on starting out ASAP...
