I think you need a 64 bit os with more then 4 gigs of ram to use detail texture in the the waistlands. Smaller maps run fine. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is the case.

Texture detail needs at least a quad core cpu or better and u must have a GPU that can tolerate it as well.

I do have a quad. Its my memory that runs out. With out detail texture I use 1.7 gigs of memory. With I use 3. some thing. The max my 32 bit os can use.

I saw no difference in memory usage going from texture detail disabled to texture detail enabled in the TaskMgr (system ram) or GPU-z (video ram).
It should only depend on your CPU, as your CPU is doing the job of adding some sharpening filters and noise/grain to the textures before they are converted to DXT's for the GPU.

It's still a 32-bit program so it still has to play by the 32-bit limits. Having more than 4gb of memory would be useless and - even on a 64-bit OS - no program can use more than 4gb of memory.

Just a note on this as there was an error in the patch notes -- you'll actually want a six core CPU or better for enabling texture detail.

Just to be clear, that's a six core cpu OR Nvidia cuda gpu?

That'd be a six core CPU, as the CPU is the one adding the noise + sharpening filters to the texture. The nVidia CUDA GPU Transcoding is only for transcoding the end result to DXTn / S3Tc.

Well their is a huge diffrence for me.

Well thanks guys, for posting up all the chunky info, I was wondering why my framerate dropped so much XD

Anyway now that I DO have a reason to upgrade, I will
(i'm still running dual-core)

In the modern gaming world it's become impractical to hold on to 32-bit OSes like Windows XP simply because you despise the thought of upgrading to Windows 7. Windows 7 has its flaws, but right now it's the only modern, stable version of Windows that uses a 64-bit kernel, something that many games recommend if not require of their users.

Right now, the only reason anyone could have for sticking with Windows XP is simply that their hardware is too old to warrant an upgrade.
