Morrowind- when you were given a quest you had to actually pay attention to DIRECTIONS. You also sometimes had to ask people for clues, they would even give you directions to people that would give you more directions. This made me feel like I was actually doing something that made a difference. It was a chore and thusly made me feel more rewarded when I finally found the place I had to go, and even moreso after I completed a quest.

Skyrim- I just got to a part in the MQ where Im needed to go find someone thats been gone for YEARS. No one knows where he's been, and no one gave me any information to even begin my search to find this guy.

I open up my map and to my surprise, theres a friggin white arrow SHOWING ME WHERE TO GO..

jesus they dumbed this game down.

You're actually complaining about the game pointing you in the correct direction towards your destination?

Wow...

Do you know how easy it is to ignore the arrow that's completely ruining yor experience? Uncheck that quest from your quest log and boom, no more arrow.

Turn the compass off, untick the quest. Problem solved.

I smell arguments, people being angry, and more arguments.

How old were you when you played Morrowind?

i see it more along the lines of abduction at gunpoint and shoving you into the trunk of a car and driving you along a bumby road to the location mostly due to the compass.

Just because you can turn off the quest markers, that doesn't mean NPCs will start talking more and actually give you directions. It's either compass or bust.

I was just thinking about this. You could do that. That's one thing I didn't like about Fallout. If you accidently clicked on a quest, that marker is stuck on your compass forever until you complete the quest.

I hated that ordeal. It just made things a bit irritating sometimes. These compasses with all these images rather than directions just confuse me oftentimes.

That was your basic way of knowing where to go in Morrowind, which is what the OP liked, so that doesn't matter.

By the way, I'm a fan of Morrowind as well and do agree that the hand holding in Skyrim is a little much but it can be avoided if you want it to.

thats another problem i hope next game they go the extra mile and include directions into dialouge for when you go to a specific non radiant location for the people that hate the compass like me.

MQ, finding a guy..... I beleive that maybe one of the few quests that IF you listen, you can find the guy w/o the quest marker on the map.

I could wish more quests had the same kind of direction.... in may not be in a journal, you just have to remember what was said.

Well, in my case I shut down the markers always and explore all the way, and I try to pick references and information. And if I dont find anyone, I keep looking. And then I feel bacl in Morrowind, spending days and days looking for something or someone.

There have been some lengthy debates on the changing face of gamers and gaming in general, how some games try to appeal to broader audiences, how some people are frustrated by that, how others take a broader view of this form of entertainment and the 10 years between Morrowind and Skyrim and how much has changed in the gaming sub-culture. It's not super exclusive or niche-y anymore.

So we get threads were people debate this at length. Sometimes it gets heated. But this isn't one of those threads, where you opt to denigrate most of the audience with your opening post and title.. "if you like this game, you have the intellect of a 9 year old." Thanks.

Also... the compass was a shock? Did you skip Oblivion?
