This game is Fallout 3... spiritual successor to 1 & 2

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:14 am

I am almost done with Come Fly With Me - this sidequest is better than any part of FO3's main quest !

The many places and people so far, the many factions, the many choices, the many skill checks, the feeling of paths closing off b/c another is taken - this world is so much richer and what Fallout as a genre should be.

I cannot stop calling friends and raving about it - I've played since 1pm today and its now 1 am.... amazing amazing game.

Just ordered two friends a copy each on Amazon since they have limited budgets.... Obsidian needs to be the writers for FO4 at the very least....

Wondrous game.

Thank GOD Obsidian got to take this project to the next level... from where they left off in FO2, the best game of the last decade. FONV looks like it is truly Fallout... no offense to FO 3, we wouldn't have this game without Bethesda and the preceding game, but all the same it's ABOUT TIME.

Thanks, Obsidian.

FO:NV truly is a love letter to FO1 and FO2 fans. It has so many references to the first two games and brings back all kinds of things that had disappeared in FO3.

Players who played FO1 and FO2 already know about the different ammo types, geckos and their hides, the history of the NCR, the backgrounds of some NPCs that appear in the game, an idea of what kind of person the NPC is if they know they come from Klamath, or Modoc, or the Den, or Hub. Old school fans can even pass all the tests and quizes NCR citizens should know in New Vegas without studying or hunting down answers!

New Vegas has fixed nearly every issue I had with FO3. I have been playing for 19 hours now, and I haven't even come across anything I want to mod or change, and I love me some mods.

It's really nice, yeah.
I hope they make Van Buren as well, or at least incorporate the story.

I finished the "Fly With Me" quest not too long ago, before this quest I was actually losing hope in New Vegas until this made me keep playing :D

altough i found Fallout 3 enjoyable, i find FNV wayyyyyyyy better in terms of how deep the experience is, i found F3 was big but shallow, whereas FNV is more layered...

Great job so far Obsidian (but fix those small bugs)

But other than that i have my game of the year! :-)

:foodndrink: My sentiments as well (100%)

There is only one thing missing, but it'll turn up eventually.

I agree, I though Fallout3 was ok, cool and what not, btu I didnt enjoy it as much as fallout1 and 2, in a the end a little dissapointed.
But New vegas is better in every way (except the radio stations).
Story is better, dialogue is better, gameplay is better, voice acting is better.

For me personally New Vegas >>> Fallout3 anyday.

This really does feel like FALLOUT1/2 to me, brings back great memmories.

I remember that I was introduced to Fallout by Fallout 3. I was tired of playing Oblivion and happened to notice the Fallout 3 box sitting on the shelf in a store about 2 months after it was released. The cover art wasn't to spectacular, but the name on the box caught my attention: Bethesda. I had the money to spend and I loved Oblivion and had kind of heard about Fallout through general discussion forums here/tv comercials enough to know that it was an RPG atleast, so I bought it. I loved it the second I left vault 101. But, as time passed, I began to notice just how shallow it was and how very little there was to do. There was little to no choice what so ever. I wanted something more open and free, and I now knew that Fallout 1 and 2 were sometimes considered better than 3 because of the choices and story that is included in those games, so I got them. While they kept me entertained for about a month each. I enjoyed the story from the games but I could never quite get into the gameplay. So I forced myself to keep playing them merely because they told a good tale.

And now New Vegas. It has combined the story and choices and atmosphere that I so wanted to enjoy ever since Fallout 3 but as of yet have not truly been able to with the fun gameplay and decent graphics and engine from Fallout 3. Honestly, this game is so far shaping up to be the best RPG I have ever had the fortune to play.

The only people who will not agree, are the die hard fans of Fallout at NMA

After Fallout 3, I lost so much hope in the future of the series. Thank you Obsidian for making a proper Fallout game :D There's not many games that get me this addicted.

I also like how even though it's on the same engine and uses a lot of the same assets as FO3, it still looks a lot better while running smoother than FO3 ever did.

I keep reading about FALLOUT and how it cured cancer and brought about world peace in a shining new golden age but for me it was slow, convoluted and punishing of the very slightest mistake. I never made it past the entry to the necropolis.

On the other hand, I got lost in DC for about a thousand hours (over multiple playthroughs).

NEW VEGAS inventory is a tad overmuch but I am very, very pleased that Obsidian chose to create content rather than caving to the pressures of entering a pissing contest with the tech bozos (I'm looking at ya Crytek and your "fans")

Much fun will ensue. And the collector's goodies were not bad neither!

I love the Soundtrack (including 3dog over Newton) in FO3. I find FNVs soundtrack.... boring. The music really set the mood in FO3 for me

But story wise, I prefer FNV. I also dig the minor gameplay changes in FNV.

I guess I'm one of the few that really like both games. I don't evaluate games based on what other games are doing or did. I evaluate it based on the game itself.

I also agree. FO:NV is much truer to the Fallout feel than FO3 was. I love the little engine changes with stuff healing over time. Ammo and weapon mods, branching questlines, factions. It's going to make replays much more fun that in FO3, which I mostly replayed because when I was about to hit the level cap I stopped doing sidequests and just finished the game, it took me 3 characters to get all the sidequests done (pre-Broken Steel) where as with this game I wanted to make a second character already less than an hour into the game when I realized I could side with the Powder Gangers instead of the locals in Goodsprings. IN FO3 they didn't even think of making you able to actually be "bad" just a killer of innocent folks, in this there seems to actually be a while different quest path for evil characters.
In short, I'm very impressed by what Obsidian has done here. They always do excellent work with other peoples engines, (I loved KOTOR 2 for example, and have heard only good things about NW2) unfortunately, as Alpha Protocol showed, they seem to need work on their own engine creation. I really liked the way Alpha Protocols story and progression worked, but had severe combat and especially sneaking problems, to the point I didn't want to play anymore, sequel gets axed, but then they come back and hit one out of the park with New Vegas. Keep on trucking Obsidian! I'll still get your games, eventually you'll be able to get an original IP off the ground that will be just as awesome as one of your sequels.

I'm glad to see this thread. I AGREE!

FNV feels much more like the vibe of FO1 and FO2.

Just the gekos and radscorps alone did it for me.

Bugs, crashes, Framerates...who cares. All will get to play this gem eventually, a true Fallout gaming experience!

Alpha protocol used the Unreal 3 engine. It wasn't Obsidian's own creation.

I agree completely. this game feels like fallout instead of feeling like oblivion with guns. Being a long time fallout really devoted fan who still plays fallout 2 to this day I'm loving new vegas, much better than 3.
