This game has a TERRIBLE saving system.

1. save ""

2. ??????

3. Profit

Save game to a named save in double-quotes, ie save "My Skyrim Save"

It will overwrite existing save with the same name without any prompting.

but why should we need to open the cheat console to save a game properly?

I just wish you could NAME save files, as in Morrowind. Just name it after your character, assign a few numbers to it for however many backup files you want for said character, and then it is MUCH easier to find a specific save, without having to scroll through countless saves and read the description of each one to find a specific character when you are playing as several at once. I mean, really, how hard is it to give us that option? If my wording makes ANY sense at all.

I totally agree. I'm OCD about my save files, so seeing that I am on save 102+ is really... annoying!

They have pretty much the single worst save system of any modern game on the PC specifically.
RAGE would like to have a word with you.

Honestly, every PC TES game I've played (and lots of other games too) does the same thing. You have dedicated 'full' saves where you can save whatever you want (although the lack of naming is a bad thing, I agree), and then you have a set of autosaves and quicksaves shared across all characters. It's not like this is a new thing that Skyrim has just introduced, it's been around for ages.

Actually, Far Cry 2's system is much, much worse because it makes a new save file for every quicksave. The folder quickly balloons to like 3GB large.

Characters should be separated where you can have multiple saves for each not grouped up with others. I've already overwritten a character that I'd been playing for many hours and no way to get it back (except at a much lower level).

The big question is WHY don't they let us name our save games on the PC???

People have been [censored]en about this for years, and Bethesda just keeps ignoring it. And it is a simple thing to do

Just shows how severe the "consolitis" is: naming saves is too hard for the button thumpers, so PC players don't get to name saves either

Its not a cheat console. Every action you make in the game is controlled by commands like this one. Command-line and Graphical User Interface (buttons and menu) both use command-line. You just click a button instead of typing the command.

I think there is a mod available on nexus for save game management though. You should check that out.

I quit using all the autosaves in oblivion and saw the saving system was the same in Skyrim so I bypassed it right away. I see that when you get a bunch of saved games, the UI gets buggy as well. That was an Oblivion issue too. Just save over one game and keep a couple extras just in case and you should be fine. Just remember to save!

Another FU to consoles for leaving us with an inane save system. Maybe we should be grateful that we don't have to go visit a shrine to save.

And if you're losing 20 hours of gameplay from a lost save... save more often?

That's overkill. Just rename the save directory and you can have as many characters as you want.
This, too.

Not a big question. They can't deviate the code structure from the main trunk used for the consoles, since when they patch the three have to be very similar.

Saving over a single save file repeatedly seems to crash the game as well. Its better to just move the older files to a new folder. This also protects you from destroying your progress with a corrupted save.

at least for me, the new patch broke sgm (save game manager), and i lost 60 hours of game play.
and Skyrim / Oblivion save game system is terrible when compared to Bioware's DA and DA 2 (Dragon Age Series).
I wish Bethseda would have a sgm like DA, but sadly it will never happen.
