Is this game a sequence to the previous story?

Hi everyone. Will there be anything, that will require knowledge of storyline or ending of Fallout 3, or it is a whole new story?

Thanks for the answers...

It is a completely different story from FO3. There are a few references I have found (mostly teasing/making fun of FO3 so far) but nothing that is at all critical to the story.

If you played FO1 or FO2 you will notice a lot of references & tie-ins to the original lore, but again - nothing that you need to be aware of prior to playing. If you find a character interesting and he makes mention of something you aren't sure of, spend a few minutes on The Vault to learn the backstory.

Yeah, the game is stand alone. It is just nice to know the history so that you can get the joke references. No real references to what happened in FO3 or anything like that.

There are some references. For example, I think the Survival skill book is called the Wasteland Survival Guide.

@OP: You should try Fallout 3 first, just to be able to appreciate all of what's been added to New Vegas that wasn't in Fallout 3. You can get the standard edition for less than $20 now, and the Game of the Year edition should be fairly cheap, too.

Note that I said no real references to what happened. Wasteland Survival Guide is in the game but no info on what it is or where it is from. Regardless, it in no way references events in FO3, just an item.

Oh I disagree...
I think you should play F1, F2 and then pretend New Vegas is F3. And move F3 into that dusty bottom drawer that also houses Alien 3.
Then dig up Wasteland, marvel at the choices and freedom you have and wonder why in 2010 you can't have so many ways to open a locked door
if you could back then.

  • Have you met Yes Man? He makes a joke reference about the possibilities of a 'Giant Death Robot' being the secret weapon.
  • You'll hear people say things like: Who's stupid enough to eat 200 year old food?
  • The 'Wasteland Survival Guide' is what you read to get your Survival skill bonus which - if you played FO3, you'd know was a joke book. I still liked finding it. Made me smile.

I ran across the Wasteland Survival Guide, that's about it as far as DC references. Nothing about the purifier, nothing about the DC BoS using Liberty Prime, nothing about the Enclave getting killed again, not even so much as a passing mention of Three Dog.

That is also a reference to the same thing from Fallout 1 & 2 as well if my memory serves correctly with regards to 1.

Played it, just didn't completed. Got into some other stuff, that required time, then haven't had the feeling to play it anymore. Will come back to FO3 sometime though, I think. ;)

I must have been under a rock because i didnt know about new vegas till i saw the tv advert,
at first i thought it was another expansion.

Ive played fallout3 and was wondering the same thing as the OP, I havent played new vegas yet.

Is new vegas set before F3 ?, at the same time ?, is there any connection in the storyline ?
or is new vegas a completely new game, just using the same engine and there are no real links to
fallout 3, except the odd reference in the game ?

i mean in the first game you start out in vault101 and get the beginnings of the story from there.

so how is new vegas related in the fallout 3 universe story wise?

sorry for the questions!

New Vegas in the Fallout timeline is set Three years after the events in Fallout 3.
There is absolutely no storyline connection between Fallout 3 and New Vegas other than an odd vague reference, it has more references to Fallout 2 than the rest of the games.

Actually in the 'First' game we start out in Vault 13, it's not until the 'Fifth' game that we start in Vault 101. Going chronologically the Fallout games are Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.

Lastly New Vegas isn't directly related to Fallout 3 in the Fallout Universe other than by a few snippets here and there plus that it is set near the West coast of the US, while Fallout 3 is set on the East coast of the US, it has as I mentioned more direct connections to Fallout 2 than 3.

New Vegas does feature a ton of references to the first two games, but really, everything is explained or implied well enough that you don't get too muddled in history. If that happens, use the Vault for reference. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki
