This game is a victim of false advertisemant.

Post » Sun Oct 14, 2012 11:46 pm

Aside from the multitude of ways to get through missions and having to play more than once to see everything, this isn't what it was advertised to be.

- It was advertised as a dark and gloomy game, as seen in the screenshots, descriptions and videos, even this forum's background. Why is it so bright and vibrant? The full game looks nothing like these things.

- Is this game meant to be funny? Characters, most deaths, dialogue are extremely cheesy.

- Dunwall was supposed to be modeled after Victorian London... LOL what?! Not even close.

Cliffs: I can't believe I bought this.

Good name. (This is sarcasm btw)

Skyrim is a COMPLETELY different genre

Dunwall is fictional. FIC-TION-AL

playthrough nonlethally, and the darkeness really comes in when you eliminate people using living hells,

The later chapters are dark

  • The atmosphere of the game changes on your playstyle.
  • Only funny part I can think of is the two thugs telling jokes.
  • Key word is supposed. In fact it was supposed to be set in an alternate victorian london. But they changed that.
The only false thing here is your information.

Spoiler
I just kidnapped the royal physician and have killed everything in my path but the Pendletons and my game looks like Hello Kitty Adventure.

While it has very vibrant colors (this is a good thing in a world that consists entirely of brown shooters and gray Skyrim), the atmosphere is extremely bleak...it is a dark game and if you kill a lot, it gets even darker...the art style gives it a kind of stylized, painterly look that you don't find in other games...

I don't find the game funny...there are some situations that might educe a chuckle, but overall it is not funny...and there is a difference between modeled after and inspired by...it is not London...

Bright? I welcome it after all the dismal, brown games that regularly come out these days.

But it doesn't fit the game. This is the type of game that should be extremely dark, cloudy and depressing just as the background here shows. It would be perfect if it actually looked like that.

Environment and atmosphere is a very important finishing touch on a game.

But they said to adjust it until I could barely see the darkest icon. :(

It wouldn't help anyway, seeing as how the sun is out 24/7 and the skies are clear.

Can't form a logical response &--#62; automatically resorts to calling someone a troll.

you want a logical response? Fine then

The game is dark and gloomy, there is murder, half the city has died from the plague, whats left of the population is infected many of which to the point of becoming weepers, all the while a dictatorship has formed and is ruling the city through the use of force. On top of this events of the game involve things like poisoning people, assassination, and child abduction. One level even takes place inside a brothel.

Characters are also extremely dark and are often referenced to either be sick and dieing (or in many notes in the game dead), plotting to kill each other, hiring assassins to murder each other, trying to break out of a corrupt city, betraying others for personal gain, tortureing others, along with some characters expressing desire to kill themselves.

As for modeled after Victorian London it is. That doen't mean exact replica. It was based off victorian london, whaling cities, and their own designs mixed in as the devs have stated.

Also you claim you just kidnapped the royal physician but then reference it having no effect on the Pendletons. Newsflash. The Pendletons mission is before the royal physician one.

As for it being day 24/7 the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th missions all take place at night. Less than half of the missions take place during the day.

And regarding atmosphere as mentioned. Half the city dead, a good chunk of the rest dieing, corrupt and dicatator-esque government, murder, etc. That is a very dark atmosphere. Add in aspects like many of the notes you can find lieing around, the immense amount of corpses before you ever show up, and the heart and the atmosphere is extremely dark.

The brightness in exterior belies the darkness that is going on beneath the workings of the city of Dunwall. Sometimes the greatest atrocities are performed in the light of day, and I think it's a contrast that works. There's definitely some gallows-humor, but I've never felt like a plot point has been funny haha at any time. The game evolved from initial inspiration of two different time periods and one seminal event into a fictional world of Arkane's own design. I don't watch the Nolan Batmans and think, "That's not Gotham. That's Chicago. This is stupid.". I'm either drawn into what I'm watching or the remainder of any reservation succumbs to suspension of disbelief assuming the movie or game (any medium) is good enough to put me in that mindset.

I have a feeling though no matter what I say you will still have your opinions and I'll have mine and never the twain shall meet. You should go back to playing Skyrim I guess.

What are you talking about?? The game is grim as heck. There are so many twisted things going on here, like the non-lethal quest for lady boyle: sick stuff. The key word here is subelty and contrast, the game dosen't force darkness down your throat like some bad tv series, but that dosent mean the game is cheerfull. In fact, I have a hard time coming up with any other game who have this much grim stuff thrown into it

I'm curios as to how the responsibility of deciding what this game is about or what it should be came to you.

The environment and atmosphere of these games are very important yes, that's why it's so nice that Arkane completely nailed both.

-It is gloomy at parts. You obviously haven't progressed enough to see it.

-The game does have humorous dialogue, that I will admit, but funny? No, the games mood and feeling has no humor.

-So is it supposed to be a clone of Victorian London?

Ah, no. This is probably the game with the most accurate advertisemant.

Turn down the brightness.

Mediocre writing but nobody advertised it to that depth when it comes to narrative.

It was supposed to and they redid it.

it is not false advertisemant. It is juts your opinion of it, which I must politely and respectfully say, svcks. But hey there is no account for taste.
first complete the game then say what you have to.
Now I also don't understand how come a city with plague, so much rats and corpse, half people dead and many dying, corrupt government taking the freedom and lives of people as "not dark" :/
