To those that loved Morrowind

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:13 am

I'm one of those people that ranks Morrowind as one of the greatest games of all time but was disappointed by Oblivion. As a result, I expected Skyrim to be excellent, but still a bit disappointing compared to Morrowind. Almost 20 hours in however, and I am stunned. Skyrim is giving me a sense of wonder and awe that I have not felt since Morrowind. I honestly wasn't expecting this. I'm not saying Skyrim is perfect, far from it, but everything is coming together into an experience far better than Oblivion ever managed.

To other Morrowind veterans - how is Skyrim for you?

It's early days for me yet, and the thing I found most objectionable in Oblivion is still present in Skyrim (the handholding mechanisms, really, I don't mind getting lost, to me that's PART OF the gameplay :)) but I'm hopeful. One of the things I liked about MW was the diverse terrains in different parts of the land. I don't think I'll be getting much of that, but as long as there's wonderful things to discover and explore, I guess I'll be happy.

My usual Bethesda game behaviour is to totally ignore the main plot and just find all the other stuff to do. I'm hoping that Skyrim won't be like Oblivion as far as creature scaling etc goes, but I'm less hopeful about that. In MW there were certain activities that were just too dangerous until I'd levelled up, I'm guessing this is a quality that Bethesda have dropped for whatever reason now. Still, there will be mods to fix it :)

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. I'm loving skyrim and it might even be better than morrowind, my favourite game

It's pretty much amazing. I don't think it'll ever be as good as Morrowind was, but then again, not even Morrowind is as good as Morrowind was anymore.

@DMarkwick Don't worry about scaling. Skyrim does NOT use the oblivion system. There are plenty of ways to get yourself killed if you do something stupid. Some of the monsters are very dangerous indeed. Even if you set difficulty to novice, there are things that will one shot a low level character.

As a whole the game seems to be between oblivion and morrowind in terms of mechanics, but takes the best of both. Plus some good stuff from fallout. You'll love it.

Been playing for a while now since release, I say by far it surpasses Oblivion. Everything just felt pretty dull and dumbed-down in Oblivion, I was aware i was playing a game, unlike in Morrowind I forgot the fact I was playing a video game and instead felt like I was in a whole new world exploring the land and its oddities. I think Skyrim brought back more of that immersive gameplay and exploration alot more closer to Morrowind, though it does feel like it is a bit more casual gamerish compared to Morrowind, where Morrowind was more hard-core basment dungeons n dragons type rpg. Either way Skyrim is still an amazing game no question.

I am starting to like it better the more I play. I willingly admit that as a played for the first five hours I was not too impressed as it felt like I was playing an adventure game more than an Elder Scroll game. It's not that that kind of playstyle is bad, but I wanted an RPG with a side of action, not the other way around. It almost felt like playing a Legend of Zelda game (one of the better ones like Ocarina of Time). But as I got into crafting, doing a bit of magic, and going through various dungeons I am now more satisfied with my purchase as I think I have found my ideal play style for Skyrim.

Now compared to Morrowind, I do miss having the ability to make a class, but that is not a huge concern as the class becomes more evident as one plays more. There are a lot of game mechanics that obviously trump Morrowind's old stuff, and I am more than okay with that. Like the OP, I think Morrowind was one of the better games out there, but Skyrim does have its charm.

I don't put Morrowind in my 'all time greatest' list but I did like it very much at the time. Like you, I was disappointed with Oblivion and didn't play it very long at all. There was something about it that felt very flat to me and for some odd reason I found free-roam exploring boring.

But so far I'm liking Skyrim much better. Maybe the graphics give me more of a sense of grandeur, maybe it's the sense of it being a bit more of a mash-up of MW, Oblivion, and Fallout(game mechanics, not setting). I don't know. Yeah, the UI for PC is annoying & sometimes I'm not fond of the simplification of some of the game mechanics, but I'm getting used to it/doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother some people, so I can ignore it. Skyrim's given me back some of that sense of exploration that Oblivion lacked...I want to see what's around the bend, on the other side, and over there, even if there's no reward other than the satisfaction of having done so. I wasn't expecting to be this impressed either. But it's nice that so far, at least, I am. :)

Plus, y'know....the dragons are pretty cool. Maybe over-hyped/rated, but still pretty nifty.

"Morrowind" is one of the greatest games ever made.

I think the same thing as "Oblivion".

"Skyrim" looks to be more than following in the footsteps of it's established pedigree (and yes, there were great games before "Morrowind" but I'm not going to pretend I played them).

"Skyrim" certainly has a very "Morrowind" feel to it and seems to preserve this while incorporating the brilliant innovations made in "Oblvion" and adding completely new stuff as well.

I played Morrowind ever since it was released and loved it. But I'm not letting nostalgia cloud my judgement, Skyrim is better in every possible way and proves how much gaming industry has advanced in the past 10 years.

I totally agree. Skyrim is like a mix of Morrowind and Oblivion to me, and the result is stunning. It beats Oblivion in every point, and comes equal to Morrowind (though I don't like comparing new games to Morrowind as it apparently can't hold up in most parts regarding gameplay and graphics). I do enjoy Skyrim a lot more than I did Morrowind, for some reason.

I can not calculate the hours I've spent in morrowind. I can calculate the hours I have spent in skyrim so far (30). I think its safe to say that this game is on par with if not better than morrowind. When telling this to one of my friends he was said "Damn. Never thought I would hear that there was a game better than morrowind coming from you. I'm buying this game." Skyrim [censored] rules.

My first Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion and Skyrim is much better. I think with a lot of you Morrowind has some nostalgia when playing it or comparing it to other games. There is no way any game can replace that nostalgic feeling Morrowind gives you. Be it a better game or not, just think of the players who's first elder scrolls game will be Skyrim they will have the same feeling in the future when comparing other games. Nothing stands up to that nostalgic feeling you get when thinking or playing your favorite game, whether it is Pac-man or Skyrim, or Morrowind.

I have exactly the same thing, the atmosphere here is much more like in Morrowind. Oblivion was a great game in my opinion but everything was standard medieval fantasy stuff and this has a way diferent feel to it, like Morrowind had. This also makes walking around and exploring much more fun because you never know what you are going to find, while in Oblivion all mines/caves/dungeons etc. were standard gobin/necromancer filled caves that al looked the same.

It could also be the Morrowind music which is in it, the Dwemer ruins and especially the Xbox texture glitch that makes everything look like [censored] from up close that give me the Morrowind feel though.

I'm liking Skyrim a lot more than I ever did Oblivion, that's for sure. A bit of a return to form for TES as far as I'm concerned.

Yea I liked Morrowind but could never get deep into it to confusing for me LOL

Oblivion simplified things but it was very sandbox heavy re-used of the environment and felt hallow and to open

But Skyrim manages to meld both Morrowind & Oblivion taking what worked and taking out what did not work

I am enjoying it FAR more than Oblivion. There are a couple issues that can be solved with mods and hopefully the Creation Kit is released soon so that those can be corrected before I get very far. For now I will have to be content with trying out the different archetypes and will have to leave the real exploration of the land when I can get compass markers removed.
