To Those Who Have Already Decorated A Home

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:55 am

I'm curious, to those of you who have spent hours decorating your already existing homes, will you pack up and move all of your stuff to your new house that you build, or are you just going to "start fresh" and leave all of your old stuff at your house? I had never decorated a home before, but recently spent a long time getting Hjerim decorated. It was a lot of fun and I'm really happy with what I did with the place, but then this DLC gets announced and I feel like I started too early. I figure I'm just going to keep Hjerim as my main house, and move my family there if it's allowed, and just build a fortress of solitude somewhere... north of solitude? Or at least in the frozen wastes, if possible.

I'm definitely moving all my stuff to my new pad. I'll likely spend a bunch of coin and pour blood sweat and tears to make it, so l will bask in the glory of my new pimped out abode.

It looks like the lighting inside will be favorable as well...I threw down some torches on top of bookshelves in Hjierm to lighten it up a bit.

How does one decorate their home in Skyrim without items flying everywhere and hitting the floor?

The old "drop the items on the floor, leave the house, re-enter the house, move them to where you want them" trick still works. I think it also helps to remove all of the house's default items, as they gave me nothing but trouble, but I don't think that's necessary. All of my stuff stayed exactly where I put them, except for my jewelry museum. The Galdur Amulet kept floating away, so I eventually just stuffed all of my jewelry in a wardrobe. Except for the crown I made in Dawnguard, which is sitting nicely between two Dibella statues on top of a high shelf in my bedroom. Looks nice.

I was also wondering ... "Decorating? How?"

I really hope they will finally make placing stuff easier, at least like Oblivion.

I never really decorated a home, beyond paying for furnishings. But all three of my characters have a fair amount of stuff stored in their respective pads. One of them probably won't be interested in building a house, but will want to adopt. The other two have some heavy duty moving inh their future, I expect. Maybe I'll temporarily activate the Steed Stone when the time comes.

I do it all the time. What other absurdly massive game let's you manipulate hundreds of real time 3d objects and then even allows you to view said objects in 3d in the inventory and even zoom in and rotate them? Brilliant.

I'll probably move the stuff that I often use but the I will probably keep my other houses as basically themed storage (i.e a weapons and armour house, a potions, mages materials etc.) or just leave an identical chest-full of supplies in each house in case I need a quick resupply

"Start fresh" Cause i think that's the only option and it Would be better. Considering you can already Have

Alchemy Lab (Almost any or all Houses have this)
Enchanter Tower (Almost all houses have this, Except it's a table)
Kitchen (All houses have this)
Greenhouse (Riften has a garden)
Bedroom (All Houses)
Fish Hatchery (New)
Bee Hive (New)

And more..

Only thing diff is Architecture

I don't trust the weapon racks and mounts and display cases in the houses, because people always report glitches where they lose the item they put on/in it.
So I just put everything in different containers.

Ugh, thanks for reminding me. I had almost forgotten that ever happened. Now my OCD is going bonkers.

I know exactly what you're saying. Not too long ago I put in some hours decorating the top floor in Proudspire Manor. I'm an avid collector of almost everything I find and rarely do I sell anything so I have plenty to redecorate another house.

The only gripe I have is how hard it really is to manually decorate your home in Skyrim. From objects automatically flipping upside down to items reappearing in their orginal position. It is possible, just much more difficult than it was in Oblivion for example.

Of course I will, but I hope they fix the recent bug they made by a previous patch. The one where things flip upside down when you grab them.

Certain homes with certain character, yes. As for my main character, I spent a few hours setting up his home in Markarth. But I've always wanted to buy a house in Falkreath ever since the game was released. It just seems like the perfect place for a sort of "Hunter's Lodge" style house. Because of this, I'd gladly take everything down again and never return to Markarth.

As for my other characters, I'm not sure. I'll probably leave enough items at my old house so it doesn't seem so bare.

This, I tried it, and gave up. However, these homes in hearthfire can use some decking out, I'll try it.

I have different style homes with all my chars; the happy family house, the wizard "tower", darkness and death house of horrors, holiday cabin etc. etc. one character might even have two or more of these depending on the way I RP them.

I really have to build the three houses to their fullest and see what suits them best and decorate accordingly.
When I decorate I use the leave and reload "trick" and edges of shelves etc. to tip over items into their correct position. Got quite good at it too! All the bugs in jars are standing next to one another on a ridge in Markarth. :-D

I've only spent around 3 hours decorating Hjerim, but ill definitely be moving out with the arrival of this DLC, and ill most likely take the majority of the displayed items with me. Even my stack of gold ingots that took a while to place :stare:
