My thoughts on crafting....

OK, we already know that crafting is going to be a huge part of this game...but I am afraid that actually it may be the least developed part or easy mode part of the game in order to make happy all casual and care-bear players :/.

My ideal crafting system would be .... based on the one that SOE developed for EQ2:

- Each player can chose only one crafting profession

- for a significant number of items crafter need items crafted by other profession (it keeps economy vibrant and makes every profession important)

- It is not one click action where player can start crafting process and go to watch a movie:

*In EQ2 you had 4 tiers of crafting one item: each tier gave you better quality item.

*You had set of special skills (buffs and de-buffs) that had to be constantly applied in order to complete crafting at the highest tier of the item,

*It required player attention, especially when crafting items using rare resources.

But I am sure this model would not be something that nowadays many MMO players would be happy about, therefore, I have two other models that may come in line with what people want.

1)

I am strongly against a crafting model where everyone can craft everything, it push on margin people that don't want to invest too much time in crafting and destroys the economy of the game.

So why not to let players to have as many crafting professions as they want?

BUT, there must be a penalty!!!!

So if you decide to practice only one crafting profession you can reach max level, lets say lvl 50, but if you want to have 2 crafting professions, you will be able to reach only 45lvl in both of them, for 3 crafting professions only lvl 40 and so on. so if you want to be a jack-of-all-trades you can but there is a cost to pay!!!!!

2)

Progressive crafting.... You earn more slots for new crafting professions with your adventure level.

The only requirements is that you have to chose the main profession which you are allowed to level to max lvl (50).

All additional professions can be trained only to lvl 25. what is the benefit? If you decide that you want to be jeweller instead alchemist you don't have to start from the scratch but there is a penalty too: when you switch your profession, you lose all the progress above lvl 25!!!

I know that MMO players have different views on crafting but since in this game it is going to be a huge part of the game I really would like to see a model that is not a one click system.

I hope devs read this forum :)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The crafting they have planned is pretty cool.

I'm strongly pro. It's a TES game and I don't want to play alts. One character to do everything.

I haven't seen any MMO where restricting crafting professions actually has any effect on the economy a) because most crafts are relatively useless and  players can use alts to level multiple crafts.
