Thoughts From A TES Virgin

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 11:16 pm

First off let me start by saying I really like this community, of course there are some sweeties who like to bad mouth and complain or troll but I ignore them. Okay then on with my rambling......

I come to TES and Skyrim from World of Warcraft, I am use to MMO's so I wasn't sure how I was going to take to Skyrim. I stopped playing WoW because of the community and the rubbish that is Cataclysm. So when I saw the commercial for Skyrim I was immediately drawn into it and the fact it wasn't an MMo just made me want it more. I wanted to play at my own pace, my own time and without a bunch of people I have never met being in the world with me. I simply got tired of having to schedule raids and getting my head ripped off by some elitist jerk who thinks WoW is real.

I digress....So I got my PC version of Skyrim after work last night and after thirty minutes of making what I think is the perfect character ( Imperial female named Kyrhyraeth) I set off on my adventure. Oh and by the way it took all of 15 minutes to download. Now, I am use to the way characters move in WoW so I had to force myself to stop trying to move Kyr that way. I felt like I was fumbling and being clumsy but then I realized I need to stop over thinking this. :teehee: I read so many negative posts about the keyboard usage that I was letting that take over. Let me tell you once you get use to it and just learn the keys it's simple, remember I never played Oblivion so I can't go based off the way the keyboard was on there. The mouse movement takes getting use to and I am not going to lie it's aggravating but it's a minor hindrance for me anyway.

I am playing on low settings sadly, I did try medium but it's a bit choppy so I said screw it the graphics are gorgeous even on low! I am having a blast killing things, looting their dead, lifeless bodies and then moving on to pick flowers and herbs all at my own pace. I love being a noob in a new game, this is how nostalgia and memories are made. I am just having fun learning the game and discovering the land. It really is a gorgeous game and I want to enjoy it.

I think this is an awesome game and every bit worth the wait I was and we all were enduring although it seems some people wouldn't agree. For someone coming from an MMO into a single player game this is perfect! I really do love this game already yes, there are some minor issues to me and I have yet to have an arrow stuck in my noggin (so glad). I hope for the people having issues or not liking the game thus far will soon love it too.

I know this was long but I felt like I needed to get this out there, I really like this community and everyone has been nice to me so far and I thank you guys! :hugs:

With that said.....

DRINKS ON ME!!!! Oh and waffles must have waffles!

Thanks for reading my ramble.

Glad you like it.

I'm playing WoW too (But have been playing TES games since Morrowind) So you are not alone ;)
Just try not to think as yourself playing as much as you tend to do in MMOs but as your character and you will have tons of fun.

Wow. Well said. I'm new to TES also, so it took me like 3-4 hours to get completely acquainted with everything, but now I"m on my way :) I had gotten out of the tutorial and had wandered around Skyrim a bit, but decided to start over, as I'd like to be a bit more serious about who I choose to kill and what stuff I choose to carry -- I was like hoarding everything until I couldn't walk anymore LOL. Also, going through the tutorial again, I learned how to pick locks, which I didn't have the patience for the first time :) Plus, I also got more of a grasp on what's going on, story-wise :celebration:

Anyway, so far, Skyrim is shaping up to be my favorite game of all time, and I've been gaming most of my life (now early thirties). I have to admit though, when I first came out of the cave and saw Skyrim for the first time, I almost cried... Maybe I'm just weird, but it was AWESOME!

Thanks for posting your story :hugs:

Since I am Horde or was or what ever I am now with WoW she is a naughty Nightelf who decided to hang with the Blood Elves :hubbahubba:

I have a female Blood Elf Death Knight who I adore so sad I hate the game now.

Great to hear you're enjoying it so much!

I'm more of a veteran player, being with these games since Morrowind. I just played Oblivion's main quest after many, many years, so that the game actually felt new to me. So I think I'm the right person to compare Oblivion and Skyrim, which I feel to do right here.

I had my problems with the Steam download, but now that those are out of the way, I've finally hopped into great white north that is Skyrim. And boy of boy! After the escape/tutorial part, I don't feel any hurry at all! I just want to breathe the awesome world inside me, stop my running sometimes and just stare in disbelief of how detailed and beautiful everything is. Breathtaking! The feeling and immersion are there like never before! For the first time in ages I actually stop reading some books I stole got mainly from the starting Imperial camp, collecting flora, looking around, etc. Now that I mention the camp, I'm very into the atmosphere of the game. The starting cut scene was awesome. The guys there felt desperate, their voice acting was so much more on-the-mark than on Oblivion, and the guys even seemed to have personalities on their own! Also the color palette is so much better than in the bright candy world of Cyrodiil, where people were living more on an ice cream cake than having hard times. These Skyrim NPCs in every way feel more desperate and less cleanish, and you can see they've been through tough times with the rebellion going on, much unlike Oblivion. Also the culture and profession aspects that now are in really make at least that village of Riverwood feel alive!

So far I've just sniffed around a bit, found a bandit camp, many kinds of flora, and then went to Riverwood. I was so excited helping the local blacksmith in various ways just in his forge that I even forgot I was supposed to go talk to Ralof! Instead, I just took the bringing back an item quest from a shopkeeper whose sister seems to have a love triangle evolving around her. This dialogue between the NPCs was very interesting! I only just reached the Barrow, knocking off some bandits and wolves on the way and just taking my time with the beauty of the night sky and snowy wind. I can't help but being mesmerized all the time! In Oblivion, the quests are only dungeon-dwelling, and I constantly feel I'm in a hurry everywhere "just to get the quest X out of to way to proceed further in the game", and this continues through the game. It's good that the MQ feels urgent; it is! Just that, the game series that gives us this chance to wander around and search for places like no other games do, the game needs to make us want to do those things. Skyrim definitely succeeds, unlike Oblivion did for me.

Locations seem to have much variation - I don't know, I'm just three hours in - which is saying something; I thought it was supposed to be snowy tundra/mountain region. More variety than I thought, which only adds to the astonishing beauty of the game. So far I've only had trouble with controls (and changing them. My character, at some point, always dropped the weapon he had just favorited, etc. :D). I'll get used to them. I also don't love the one/two-handed skill. You just cannot be a pro with sword in one hand even if you've become pro with an axe in one hand! Still, this is a minor setback in the glorious world I'm going back right now, and these minor problems haven't slowed me down much at all. With everything else going smoothly - maximum graphics working well, no bugs that I've noticed and no crashing - this game is proving to be a heck of an experience. The atmosphere is right on, unlike in Oblivion. I just hope there is more variety in the quests. Bringing back a stolen item from a barrow isn't anything new, but it's Oblivion (and Morrowind, but it had more variation) all over again. The girl who took me to the border of the village wondered why that was the only item they stole, though, so I'm guessing the quest will evolve. Now I'm off to the barrow!

Oh, and music is very fitting, and there are lots of different compositions and with different style even. Epic as hell, too. Some scenes are astonishingly impressive. I'm off to find more of those now. <3

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game. I started with "Morrowind" in 2004 and agree that there's nothing like a sandbox game. I recommend that you don't try to be a jack-of-all-trades, but instead create different characters -- a stealthy thief or assassin, a warrior, a mage, etc. Also, I like what one moderator advised the forums once: when your character gets to such a high level that you're practically a god, it's time to think of creating a new character and starting over (or words to that effect).

If you still want to play an MMO, maybe you could look into "Star Wars:The Old Republic" as I am, or play "Guild Wars 2" once it's out. Anyway, have fun.

oh no no no, its not my isles, its sheogorath's mad house, the deadric prince of madness' realm, and you would only fit in half of it (the demntia side) the other half is a different shade of insanity (the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Cloudcuckooland shade, but it's happy apperence belies terrible danger)

the isles are lovely this time of year, maybe you could see it someday. hopefully not during the grey march though, things get much to orderly

Oh my God yes the music!!!!!! I am a renaissance nerd and I love Celtic music so the sound track is just amazing to me. To be honest the music helps me get in the mood and then lost in the game.

Thank you for your awesome story as well! Sounds like you are right up there with the love like I am and the awe inspiring scenery isn't it just breath taking? I never realized how beautiful graphics could be coming from the colorful world of WoW.

I enjoyed reading your experience being an Oblivion player as well and I hope you continue to love the game. Everyone who has responded just solidifies why I love this community!

Your advice did not fall on def ears and I was actually planning that strategy myself. I want to focus Kyr on her grab and stab ways where as magic is best suited for a Forest Elf which at some point I will be making

I love lock picking, I find it rather enjoyable.

I am not in a hurry to join another MMO or go back to WoW, they destroyed the game with Cataclysm and now freaking Panda's. No thank you!

I love World of Warcraft lore, books, trading cards and such but I can't stand WoW the game anymore.

I agree with you about wanting to play alone. A lot of people that are strangers online just take the joy out of playing. I really prefer playing by myself at my pace and do what I want and not be bothered by other bickering foul-mouthed and poor-mannered people. The keypad issues for me are huge with this game, but I am enjoying it so much otherwise. I found a program that helped me get around the keypad binding issue, so I'm happy.

The only reason to play Oblivion at this point is the Shivering Isles add-on. It's brilliant.
