I don't really miss crossbows and pole-arms. Those are weapons for conscript farmers, not gentlemen adventurers like me.
The one problem with having too many weapon types in RPG's is that you sometimes have to define your character too narrowly at the creation screen. This is more of an issue with strict character classes like in Baldur's Gate than in Morrowind but you still have to think long and hard when choosing weapon specializations. Otherwise, you finally find something cool like the Warblade +4 but your guy chose shortsword instead of two handed and you have to pass it on to one of your followers.
Skyrim's perk system is actually well suited to this sort of issue. First you choose one handed, then you choose blade, then you could take long sword, short sword, or dagger. By the time you choose those perks, you probably already know who your character is and how he fights. Although I miss the attributes/skills system of the previous games, I will say that Skyrim lets you choose who your character is as you go, rather than be locked into a class right from the start.
