My thoughts on TESO

Because we all know that you care about my thoughts [/sarcasm]

Still, here they are.

1) This will probably not have much effect on single player Elder Scroll titles. In fact, I very much doubt that the team that did Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim will lead this project - more likely, it will be the team that did New Vegas. Maybe a few people might switch around, but I doubt it will cause degradation in our single-player games. I can't promise that.

2) It won't ruin lore. The reason that Warcraft's story was so pissed on was because WoW happened almost immediately after the events of Warcraft 3. So they gave Arthas a crappy death, turned the aspects into a cartoonish guild of feel-goods in the Cataclysm closer, and are making the Pandaren which I'm pretty sure was initially a kind of joke into an entire expansion. But TESO will take place in the Second Era. Bethesda definitely can't screw up the continuing story of the Elder Scrolls, and they probably won't mess up established canon just to make an MMO. I imagine they'll work around their established lore, which we like, to make this game. They've given me no reason not to trust them.

3) It probably won't have a great story, fantastic visuals, etc. (even though TES as it is has a sub-par story line for each game). And that's a good thing. Because a story-based MMO is basically a single-player game that you subscribe to. One of the reasons that WoW is successful is because they really incorporate multiplayer into lots and lots of things. If you want to "beat" the game, you have to play multiplayer. But there's still room for singleplayer. So yeah, I actually hope TESO follows WoW for a lot of inspiration, minus the mind-numbing grinding and difficult group-gathering for raids. In the end, a good MMO focuses more on gameplay and player interaction than story.

4) Give it a chance. I will only really be pissed if they announce that the single-player saga of the Elder Scrolls is over, which I doubt (otherwise why wouldn't they just place this MMO after Skyrim?) Otherwise, I might even buy into it and see what its like. It won't be an Elder Scrolls game. It can't be - the open, dynamic worlds of Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim simply can't be remade in a massively multiplayer game. Nor can the first person aspect, really. But that doesn't mean it won't be good.
