Thoughts on Unjust and Just Opinions

Post » Thu Aug 01, 2013 11:54 am

Basicly, what are you thoughts about opinions which can count as Unjust, which would be someone disliking something else for bad reasoning (Most common Unjust opinion I can think of is disliking someone cause of their skin/hair/clothes/etc)... Then thoughts about opinions which can count as Just, which would be disliking something for good reason (Like if you dislike somebody because they are selfish, rude, etc)...

Note: Same thing for Liking something for Unjust or Just reasons as well!

As for my own thoughts, I personally will agree with ANY opinion out there as long they are backed by a Just reasoning... If it is an Unjust reasoning, don't be surprise if I argue a little with it... I do have two real stories to share about two Unjust issues I've bumped into. 1st being about a song, 2nd one being a general thing. I'll put them both in spoilers!

~Story 1~

Spoiler
1stly, the song we are talking about is the song in my dig (FYI: "Great to be Different") and basicly... The other person I was talking to was extremely hating on the song just mainly because the singer was mostly singing about his own troubles, and how he deal with them, instead of singing about characters from a cartoon show... I count that as Unjust cause in the song, he doesn't truly point to anybody in specific except for the female singer... But he does sing about himself, however anyone singing the song will do so too! (It's a song that can fit for anybody that can relate to the meaning of the song), and really that doesn't matter...

To me, there are only 4 Just reasons to like or dislike a song!
1. Lyrics.
2. Singing.
3. Instruments.
4. Meaning.
That's about it...

~Story 2~

Spoiler
This story is extremely simple... I have a friend who use to be a fan of a few things (Including "The Elder Scrolls Series") but now he extremely HATES them only because of their fanbases... That's it! That what he told me!

Do I need to explain further about this?

WARNING! Keep this thread clean and follow the rules! ~!~NO~!~ Religion or Politic Opinions!

Your example of an unjust opinion opinion is one of the few where the vast majority of people will agree that it's not right.

Your "just" opinions are completely arbitrary, though. This is best summed up by:

To me, there are only 4 Just reasons to like or dislike a song!

To me, there are only 4 Just reasons to like or dislike a song!

To me, there are....

To me, there are....

Your idea of "just" is itself based on an arbitrary opinion.

And to counter your example of #2: A lot of the reason I don't like professional sports is because of the sports fan base. Is that unjust? It depends on how you look at it. I personally see a lot of violent acts from sports fans, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_riot. To me, the violent acts that are the result of some fans after sporting events and overinflated salaries of the professionals is enough to make me dislike professional sports, leading to me only watching select Olympic events.

1stly, the extreme big words are quite annoying and I'm asking nicely would you please remove them?

2ndly, my thoughts of "Just" and "Unjust" are base on two things really. One, common sense of what is right and wrong. Two, content of whatever the opinion is about.

3rdly, hating anything cause of the fans is just wrong, no matter what the case. Oh and btw, sports don't make people violent. People are violent because of relationship issues, stressful lifestyles, etc. Not cause of sports. Just saying!

It's a good method of pointing out that arbitrary opinions are what guide your idea of what is and isn't a just opinion IMO.

Common sense isn't common, or even correct always. The second one is completely 100%ly arbitrary and will even vary greatly across cultures.

According to your arbitrary rules. Another example is I hate those vuvuzelas because of the annoying fans who blew them constantly for the sole purpose of annoying people. It's a fine instrument when used properly, but the fans were purposefully being annoying with it.

Oh, I also hate Naruto because of fans, because I was LITERALLY attacked by Naruto fans at AX one year due to them not liking the shirt I was wearing.

Fans *can* ruin things.

Sports have been shown to increase aggression levels, so sorry, you're wrong.

I think at least the majority of the people in this world knows differences between whats good and whats evil by age 6-10ish. And second doesn't vary except for types (As in Music, Games, Videos, etc) but it's still 'always' by content of said type. Always,

Who said they are my rules?

And people had said the same thing about Video Games yet both had been proven wrong in making people aggressive and violent so many times... So many... So how am I wrong?

What's good and what's evil is not absolute. It varies not only by culture, but also by economic situation.

Because you're the one that made them up. There's no law on opinions except any one made up by a person.

I don't see riots painting the city red after a video game release. Nor after an art exhibit. Sports riots ARE the direct result of sporting events. Sports + alcohol + mob mentality is a recipe for mayhem.

I'm talking general good and evil things, not the edited versions that happened cause of culture and economic situations, also I said stay away from this kind of speaking anyways!!!

Actually, I didn't made them up. I got them from reading many different things and that sort of stuff, you know?

Sports riots are the results of a group of stressed out people who had been influenced by alcohol and the final spark being lit due to the sport team (And/or their fans) that they dislike. Everybody in those riots is in it either cause of "Self Defense" or cause they had such a stressed out life recently and something happened to finally light all that rage up... It isn't because of the sport itself.

There's nothing religious or political about the fact that different cultures have different values. Once you get past "Killing other people in cold blood is bad", it's really hard to find a universal moral rule everyone agrees on. This is what least to the concept of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativism. Beleive me, philosophers have been at it for centuries and still they disagree greatly on the matter.

Even if you didn't make them up, they are the arbitrary rules of someone. Opinions cannot be weighed for value against your own rules.

And that to me is not a good excuse for their actions. You don't see me painting the town red after grabbing a drink after a hard week with some friends.

From your point of view the reasoning for those opinions is invalid, but for the person who holds that opinion they are justified. You can't say "that opinion is wrong" just because you don't agree with it.

Whatever... This one is just gonna end up as a huge mess... I can tell so let's stay away in general. Oky?

Eh. I still believe there are definably Unjust and Just opinions.

Oh, ye'h, it's not a good excuse. I agree there, but I was saying that isn't sports making people do those things... It's a combination of stressful things. Sports just might be the final spark? You know? Heck, sometimes I get a little aggressive (Just swearing a lot) while playing a game but it isn't cause of the game itself, just more of a combination of stressful things I currently have in my life...

I'm not saying it's wrong cause I don't agree with... There's a lot of opinions I don't agree with but I say they are right and Just... The problem is, the opinions I personally mention are unjust to the content they are about, that's what I don't like.

I tend to be allergic to 'wrong' opinions.

If people are cruel, greedy or ignorant that upsets me in the same way that a clock not saying the correct time upsets me.

Ah, but that one is absolutely wrong, because according to the made-up rules of what is just and unjust for opinions, it's an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universality_(philosophy) that it's wrong to hate something because of the fans.

So he's not saying it's wrong because he doesn't agree with it. He's saying it's wrong because the universe says it's wrong.

Key words "I don't agree with". I actually agree with the opinion of disliking sports (I don't like sports at all except for golfing) but it's wrong and unjust to dislike sports because of the fans... You are not giving the actually content itself a chance but instead basing your opinion on just people who likes it and such...

Personally, I gave sports a chance and I dislike them cause I'm not a physical person. I don't like having to run, catch balls, hit balls with a bat, etc... Whatever the case, not my way of having fun.

I don't care if you don't like the song or if you do. But if it is because of a reason that doesn't effect, or doesn't matter for, the contents of the song then it's unjust.

~Edit~

I think you misread what I'm talking about, or misunderstand.

I don't see how the words "just" and "unjust" can really apply to an opinion. Opinions have personal reasons behind them and therefore can't be gauged based of the majority opinion on the same subject.

Basicly, an Unjust opinion is a opinion where somebody didn't give the subject at hand a chance but instead having a opinion that is base on an outside source which doesn't effect or doesn't even matter for the subject at hand.

A Just opinion is a opinion where somebody did gave the subject at hand a chance and can easily pull things from the subject to support their opinion on why they dislike or like something.

Unless opinions relate to things being demonstrably wrong that can be proven to be one way or the other, such as for example the shape of the world or the ingredients of salad dressing.

You can be wrong about that or right and there isn't much middle ground.

If an opinion is to be justifiably wrong, it'd have to be wrong due to violating a universal truth. Otherwise it's only someone's opinion that the opinion in question isn't valid.

It's either your opinion that it's wrong to hate something due to fans or it's a universal fact that it's wrong to hate something due to fans. There is no in-between. It's either a fact or an opinion (it is an opinion, by the way).

You said he(or she) didn't like that the song was about having and dealing problems. Well if 'having and dealing with problems' is what the lyrics focus on, then that is the content of the song. So he didn't like it for the content. So it is ''just''.

Although I'm just assuming that is the main theme of the song as I haven't listened to it myself.

I believe what you are trying to articulate is that there are such things as good and bad opinions, but pervading relativist thought has perverted your brain into thinking that to judge an opinion which you do not share is bad. So instead, you invent terms like just and unjust because they seem less confrontational than terms such as good and bad. Much of your arguments right now don't make sense, but you show an aptitude for wanting to reason right from wrong. My advice is to study relativist thought so that you can understand why it is wicked and a perfect example of a bad opinion.

You must've forgot the word "Instead". My friend hates the song cause it was about one thing instead of another (Would be a simpler way of putting it) Which I count as unjust in itself personally. That and my friend only watched a music video of it and was mostly hating the video itself and that the video only has barely 2/3 of the song. Those factors can easily degrade a song for some people and gives the song an unfair chance to some people, mainly because those people are basing their opinions on something else, like their opinion of disliking music vids and such.

~Edit~

Actually, there was a few songs I use to hate because of the music videos but when I listened to them in the car via radio, I loved them. It wasn't the songs I was hating, it was the music videos. And yes, I know I have unjust opinions in past and prolly a few now... Though the few now are unknown to me currently cause normally when I realize one, I make it Just by giving the subject at hand a fair chance.

Or due to my disorders, I look at things in different ways and believe that if things are given unfair chances and the results is being someone liking it or disliking then I count those opinions unjust because of the unfair chances that originally happened.
