Thoughts on using Companion

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:13 pm

I’ve been using an archer I’ve found on a side mission; I've upgraded his armor and found a rare bow for him to use. Wanted to hear your personal thoughts of upgrading and using a Companion for your aid?

I find playing with a companion is a must. They are stronger than I am. My char is a mage, and without a warrior beside me to take the hits, game over.

I give mine a bow so they basicly stay back and out of my way. I also use them for carrying those very heavy dragon bones. I like them so far.

Nooo! I'm stealthing it up with a bow and a one-handed blade myself, can't have silly people in heavy armor walking around when I slice throats from behind! Unfortunately the dragon battles are a bit harder this way, but usually some giant or mammoth helps me out on that one. ;)

where is the mage merc at? Would a Mage or Bow be better for DPS at a range? I would prefer them out of my way so that I don't knock their head off with my glass mace. LOL :cryvaultboy:

I agree, I rarely use companions in these games.

Do you like playing as Stealth? I'm thinking about playing again on a more evil / stealth way.

I just wish they had the depth the companions had in New Vegas...And not just the companion wheel, the dialogue and quests as well....I mean, I like the variety of companions to choose from, but it buggs me that there is nothing more than them following you around...I would have thought Lydia had some sort of deep dark secret she needed help with or somthing...

Maybe well have some side story on DLC?

I took an execution hood off of a Dark Brotherhood victim and Lydia wore it for a bit until I stopped finding it funny.

Having gotten spoiled with DA:O I love using companions. My only grip is how they will stand in doorways and won't budge when you try to exit. Before Electronic Arts and the subsequent downfall of Bioware they had it right. The companions like in FNV, had depth and character and a back story. I love FNV, but I dislike how when you enter though a door or gate your companion or companions are in front of you rather than behind you. And say what you will, but Skyrim's romance option is ridiculous. There again, DA:O had it going on. Skyrim is a good game, but it won't be my favorite. I will continue to play DA:O, FNV and FO3. That is, of course, if the modders out there can make it more enjoyable.

I kind of consider using companions to be admitting defeat. My goal is to be powerful enough to get through stuff without using companions. With that said, I also am using stealth a lot so companions don't actually fit my play-style that much. And when I AM detected, I use conjuration anyways. But I feel much more legitimate using conjuration because it uses up magicka. In a sense, it is still me doing the damage.

In my first play through I am concentrating on being a dual weapons person --a female in fact-- so I tend not to use magic. (Spoiled again by DA:O. Although, I love playing a Mage there too.) However, I love having Lydia tagging along as a tank because I give her all of the destruction staffs that we find. Lydia loves to use two staffs at once and it is fun to watch. That way I can concentrate on other things. That being said, my first play though is a learning process with the game -- if I could stop all of the many glitches and desktop crashes that is. Besides, as in DA:O, FNV and FO3 I appreciate the interactions between the companions: something Elder Scrolls desperately lacks IMOPO. Then gain, DA:O is more of an advlt version RPG --again, IMOPO-- and that is a personal fondness.

I don't use companions, they get in the way too many times. Although they are useful for distracting a Dragon.

Thanks; sounds like I will do the same with the first play thru and make it a learning process with the game. :toughninja:
