I have developed my characters skills as a master blacksmith from the very first moment of playing Skyrim. And if you think Lydia looks good in glass armor just wait until you see her in dragonscale armor. Actually, all the female followers look great in dragonscale.
As for the home situation... I've dealt with the exact problem you are having, and here's what I've come up with. For a long time I moved everything from house to house and only lived in one house at a given time. But this ultimately caused problems. Honeyside, is probably the best overall from a smithing/enchanting point of view. You can smith all your items in Balimund's fire-salt-burning forge. But as noted previously there is no smelter. So, that can be a downside. But, the tradeoff is that you can do all your enchanting within your own home.
So, at level 48 with my thief/smith I find that since I have spent soooo much time smithing I have quite the collections of ingots, leather, and other smithing items. This led me to the conclusion that it wouldn't be so bad to have multiple smithing locations. Because whiterun has the smelter I keep all my ore in Breezehome. I also keep all of the lesser forge goods there (things to forge iron and steel goods). I tend to keep the finer metals in my Honeyside home, but I have plenty of fine ore in Whiterun so it evens out.
Basically, I can forge anything I want in both Riften and Whiterun. Then I bring all of my weapons and armor home to Honeyside where I enchant them. From Honeyside I can take my legendary weapons and armor with their powerful enchants and sell them to the many merchants that now inhabit the ragged flaggon. It is VERY worthwhile to complete the city influence quests for Delvin so that you have plenty of places to sell your good in Riften. And with those city influence quests done and some speech perks used you will be able to make money hand over fist and you'll be able to buy all the smithing materials you could ever want.
