Is it time to move house?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 8:18 pm

Guys I live as a smithy in Whitrun, right nextdoor to the table smelter and forge, I make all my own weapons for Lydia & Me, and our armour, the glass looks cool but for making gold coin glass is not the best I find making ELVIN bows the best return for your investment. Is it true you cant have aan encharntment table in a cheap house £5.000g.. Is IT TIME TO MOVE ON, and if so can anyone advise on the property i neeed..Isuppose a room with a view is out the Question...lol

Honeyside in Riften has an enchantment table I think. And it's not far from the smith either.

Every house but Whiterun has an Enchanting Table. Non are as close to a Forge/Blacksmith, but most are pretty close.

I would move to Riften. House has a back entrance into the city and is close to the blacksmith.

My current character's new goal is to buy as much realestate as the game will offer him.

I personelly perfer the house in Whiterun. The enchantment table in Dragonsreach is not very from Breezy home and you can run to it with out stopping if your staminea is high enough. Granted you are limted to your carry weight but that is where potions for strength come in. I've looked at the other houses in the game. Some are much bigger with more storage but I like the central location of Whiterun and how Breezy home is next to all the shops. I can load up and head to the shops to sell my stuff and don't have to walk to far encumbered.

That enchantment table is all the way across town, up the stairs and through two loading zones including the house and Dragonsreach. To me that's pretty damn far. I really like the Riften house. It's not too big, is in a fantastic location, has both tables inside the house and the blacksmith is very close. Much closer than that enchanting table in Dragonsreach anyway. Plus the Riften house has a great view off the back porch.

Yes, Riften is arguably the best starting house.
When you're sitting in your basemant, admiring the mannequins and weapon displays and the Enchanting Table (with potions also right at hand), you will feel like a Squire.
But there's no smelter in Riften!
Therefore, many a time I've dashed up those stairs in Whiterun, to do some enchanting...
I enjoy these little quirks (in the different towns) and have no plans to mod-in a table in Whiterun.
Nor a smelter in Riften...
You just roll with it.

Anyone with all the homes will tell you, the finest home that 'missed the boat' is Proudspire Manor (in Solitude).
Now THAT home could use a mod, to fix it up.
Starting with one single, solitary chest to hold anything, in the entire basemant...

Actually Riften doesn't have that either (but somehow it's not so acutely missed).

Vlindrel Hall in Markarth is the most convenient layout and container wise - no running upstairs-downstairs, alchemy and enchantment tables with contairs for ingredients right next to them, beautiful sight from the top of the mountain, also there is a smelter in the city; the downside is that the city's layout is quite confusing and takes some time to get used to. Windhelm also has a smelter and everything close within hand's reach from Hjerim. That's the only house I don't own though, since one can't purchase the house without doing Civil War questline, so I don't know what it's like inside with decorations and everything, but the neighborhood seems very convenient for all kinds of crafting and shopping. All houses except Whiterun got enchantment tables, but not all are close to a blacksmith, and even fewer are close to a smelter.

I have developed my characters skills as a master blacksmith from the very first moment of playing Skyrim. And if you think Lydia looks good in glass armor just wait until you see her in dragonscale armor. Actually, all the female followers look great in dragonscale.

As for the home situation... I've dealt with the exact problem you are having, and here's what I've come up with. For a long time I moved everything from house to house and only lived in one house at a given time. But this ultimately caused problems. Honeyside, is probably the best overall from a smithing/enchanting point of view. You can smith all your items in Balimund's fire-salt-burning forge. But as noted previously there is no smelter. So, that can be a downside. But, the tradeoff is that you can do all your enchanting within your own home.

So, at level 48 with my thief/smith I find that since I have spent soooo much time smithing I have quite the collections of ingots, leather, and other smithing items. This led me to the conclusion that it wouldn't be so bad to have multiple smithing locations. Because whiterun has the smelter I keep all my ore in Breezehome. I also keep all of the lesser forge goods there (things to forge iron and steel goods). I tend to keep the finer metals in my Honeyside home, but I have plenty of fine ore in Whiterun so it evens out.

Basically, I can forge anything I want in both Riften and Whiterun. Then I bring all of my weapons and armor home to Honeyside where I enchant them. From Honeyside I can take my legendary weapons and armor with their powerful enchants and sell them to the many merchants that now inhabit the ragged flaggon. It is VERY worthwhile to complete the city influence quests for Delvin so that you have plenty of places to sell your good in Riften. And with those city influence quests done and some speech perks used you will be able to make money hand over fist and you'll be able to buy all the smithing materials you could ever want.

So. Far Breezehome is the only one I own that has an apothecary satchel at the alchemy station... Why the heck don't the others! A brilliant touch that was not utilized. I find that annoying. Proud spire doesn't have one, nor Val-whatever in Markarth..... Does Riften?

Breezehome seems to be home base for many - for me due to the central location.

Val-whatever in Markarth has a satchel close the alchemy lab, but I store all the ingredients in the barrels right next to the lab without having to take even a step from barrels to lab.

The Windhelm house has a wardrobe very close to the alchemy/enchanting room. I store ingedients and filled soul gems in it. The town itself has most of what you need as well (but I really miss having a 24-hour shop nearby which Whiterun has).

I'd recommend the house in Markarth. It has the enchanting table and there is a smelter in the area. On top of that, it puts you closer a good moonstone mine.
