Tips and advices on my pure mage build?

Post » Thu Aug 16, 2012 2:17 pm

I bought Skyrim only 3 days ago and I can undoubtedly say that it's by far the best game I ever played. I just can't believe that a single-player game can be this developed and thorough.
But I'm only a beginner and I don't want to start playing all over again just because I made a mistake in leveling my character or doing something wrong, so I thought if one of you professionals could
give me an advice on what to improve, add, remove etc. on my pure-mage build. Some overall playing tips would be appreciated as well.

This is what I was aiming on:

With Skyrim, you actually have to be trying to screw over your character in order to make the game unplayable. While some builds are worse than others, there's really no build that can't handle everything Skyrim throws at it... even if you have to go back at a later date.

Anyway, with Mages, sign up with the College of Winterhold or speak to the Jarl's court wizard. The spell tomes you can buy from them are essential to playing a mage.

if you don't tell us what kind of mage you want to be it's hard to help you :P

These are some of my builds:
  • Destruction build: http://skyrimcalculator.com/#175808
  • Illusion build: http://skyrimcalculator.com/#175812
  • Conjuration build: http://skyrimcalculator.com/#175811
but it's hard to mess a build, just as Marss said ;)

I always take the extra pockets perk from the pickpocketing skill tree with most of the mage characters I have made.

Here, how about this;

Use daggers for backstabbing, and ice magic when found. Illusion for groups. Enchanting for making better gear. You can stick Alteration in there if you want, but the build is already perk heavy.

My golden rule: "a mage with only one school of magic is like a warrior with no armor."
Meaning don't use destruction alone - always combine it with another school of magic.

You look like you've got that covered though. I'm a little confused as to the inclusion of sneak, however? A 'pure' mage suggests a mage who is using only the magic-related skills, whereas you've got a thief/Mage hybrid there. I'd drop sneak if you're looking for more of a challenge ;)

It looked like he wanted a mage assassin, so eh. I'd cut Conjuration and Alteration.

Oh, sorry. Then yeah, I'd cut out conjuration - the idea of an assassin is a quick, clean kill, right? That's hard to do with a frost atronach stomping into the room with you!

Haha, yeah, "stealth" doesn't come to mind when I think Atronachs.

A pure mage uses all magic schools. Illusion and conjuration are very powerful.
Enchanting is a must 25 magic reductions on all schools except destruction which I find a 75 percent reduction suitable for that school.
Alchemy is great to boost your mage in any number of ways you can also maintain a steady stream of magic potions remember a mage without magic potions is a dead mage indeed.
