Tips for a first mod?

Post » Tue Oct 09, 2012 5:38 am

So let's say, i've been interested in the CK and would like to create my first mod, but i don't have much of an idea about one that i'd like to see right now.... What kind of mods could i give a first try at? Is there a place where i can check what mods are wanted by players, so i could maybe find something nice?

First apps/mods IMO should be:

Nexus mod manager (incredibly helpful for installing stuff from Nexus, which has a lot of the mods)

Skyrim script extender (SKSE)-not really a mod per se, but an application that extends the game's capability and is requisite for a lot of mods

Unofficial Skyrim patch

More Hotkeys please (couldn't play the game without this personally and requires SKSE)

That is what I'd consider absolutely essential to a beginning modder (from my perspective).

An additional one that I'd highly recommend (takes a _bit_ to adjust to, but once you make the adjustment it is fantastic:

I'm surprised to read that you want to check which mods are most wanted by the players. Normally, modders mod for themselves and if somebody likes it, then that's a plus. So the first question you need to ask yourself is: what do YOU want to change in the game?

Modding has many aspects and each of those requires a different skill set, from 3d modelling to scripting.

Personally, I have found that one of the easiest mods to start with are perk mods.

Your first source of information should be the game itself; just open the CK and see how Bethesda did the things they did. Second source for me are user-made mods that are similar in contents to the one you want to make.

I guess it depends on what you feel like doing.
What is wanted by players tend to range from quite complicated script heavy [censored] to armour mesh conversions to fit a certain body.

Creating a new armour/weapon
You can create a new follower
A small player house

That are 3 suggestions I'm guessing would be rather easy to pull of as a first mod.
I don't hold any experience though, I've just made one armour conversion...

Well, i'm learning some basic programming in school right now and i know some webdesign and design in overall.... but i never really made mods yet for any game... I only did some recolors and texture changes years ago. I suppose maybe some knowledge before attempting to make a mod would help me... but i just feel like i want to create something o.o

If you're feeling up to the task and want to start with scripting, start with the tutorials on the Creation Kit wiki. After that I'd say just start doing little things in code to start challenging yourself. Try making a chair spin in mid-air using only script code that uses a while loop and SetAngle(). Things like that. Those sorts of things will further your understanding and expand what you can do to more interesting, useful Papyrus-based mods.

Don't mod for others, mod for yourself. What would you like to see? :)

TESA's CK Basics course is a good place to get started in the CK: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/topic/4655-introduction-creation-kit-basics/
