Tips for staying cool?

Post » Sat Jun 30, 2012 4:00 pm

So, currently, it's 103 Degrees F outside, and our air conditioner is broken. My room also happens to be the hottest in the house. I have 3 fans running, but they're just blowing warm air at this point. Any tips for not suffocating or dying of heat stroke? Heat stroke is actually an issue. I've gotten it before.

Thanks.

Running cold water on your wrists helps a bit (theory is that it cools the exposed veins).

Drink lots of water. Avoid coffee and the soft drinks. They will only dehydrate you.

Smoking is supposed to make you look cool right?

I never got the 'just blowing hot air around' thing. Even in the hottest (non-sauna) room I've been in, a fan still helps. Admittedly I'm in the UK so the hottest room I've been in is probably still pretty mild.

drink lots of water, maybe try wearing a cool towel around your neck (seen lots of the gals i work with doing that, so it probably works), and the running cold water over your wrists thing makes me feel cooler.

Don't have too many electronics on at once. Keep your doors open. Try not to move around and use too much energy. I've found that little things like that really help out.

The water suggestion is the main one. You're going to sweat, no matter what you do, so you need to be putting water back into your system.

I like to make sure my face is cool, because my body tends to follow suit so naturally I point a fan right at my face. Fans do help, they are my lifeline. Without them I'd be dead in a ditch somewhere. Perhaps the BEST way to overcome the heat is to fight fire with fire, and hop in a sauna? I've used saunas in the summer before.

Leave doors and windows open for cross ventilation. (But make sure you have those screen doors or panels so bugs or... er... thieves don't get in.) Also, cover the roof and walls of the house with something. A large canvas sheet usually does the trick. Wear white. Water is also essential.

If it gets too unbearable, sit in the car with the AC on.

I disagree. When its too hot, leaving windows and doors open just allows the super-warm air inside the house. Shut your windows and rely on fans.

I guess it depends on position and other weather conditions like wind then, because if my AC is out, I always do this and it works great. I have the fan on as well though.

But if the door is closed, it's not as cool. I'm not on ground level though, my room is upstairs, so I don't know if that changes anything.

I'm in Dubai, and it gets pretty damn hot here, so I've learned all these tips from personal experience. :P
