I wouldn't doubt if Todd Howard wanted to actually own the CoD IP. I do think it's funny how CoD has become more complex, and convoluted as time has gone on while TES gotten a little simpler, and more sleek.

I've played CoD somewhat competitively since CoD4 and it has become more complex. The metagame has totally changed with the new additions they have added. It has gotten to the point where quite a few fans want them to tone it down and simplify it to try and capture what made CoD4 so great. What made CoD4 so great to a lot of people is they felt it was balanced, and while it was pretty balanced it needed to go through some changes (such as removing perks that directly influence your characters damage, health, or speed)

So what you're saying is you never played a real CoD game, just the Modern Warfare games.

As for never playing a "real CoD" game then no I've never really played a CoD game before 4. I've played 2/3 but really didn't like shooters at the time. I'm also wondering if World at War and Black Ops are considered "Modern Warfare" games because they are cut from the same mold.

I understand the love for all things pretentious but CoD4 was innovative and shaped the shooter market that we see today. I'm not missing much by not really playing anything before 4.

They are all "real" CoD games.

Maybe you don't like the direction they took, but that doesn't make it any less CoD.

Game market got bombarded with WW2 games and CoD HAD to change it up.

Not to mention it got stale.

I think that COD4 was the last great COD. WaW had one single critical flaw (the grossly overpowered MP40), and later ones were good, but not great. Though they do have redeeming factors, such as the campaign mode. MW2 had Spec Ops, Black Ops had Wager Match (and some people liked the Zombie Mode), and MW3 had custom playlists, most notably Infection, which was recently made into an official mode.
