Recently, my attention has been drawn to perhaps one of the biggest problems with the game industry.
A major problem in the game industry is overpopulation, there are too many underdeveloped games, now I am not necessarily pointing the finger at the developers or the publishers, but instead at both, in different scenarios publishers and developers are guilty. There have, especially in recent years, been an overflow of games, this is not necessarily bad, lots of games is a good thing, but when most of those games are not good games then we reach a problem.
I have seen in multiple circumstances great games being ruined by deadlines, and many times it is not the developers fault. There have been many cases in recent years where developers have run out of time to finish a game due to the fact that publishers are so obsessed about releasing games on time. Personally, if a game is released late but is still a very good game I will still buy it, additionally, if you release a great game late it makes people even more eager to get it, i.e. more money. The one thing that bugs me about the way publishers behave, especially mainstream publishers, is that they don't realize that if you make a great game and make fewer of them, you're going to make more money than if you make a ton of [censored] games. I'm not sure about other people but I'm more inclined to buy a good game that is released late than I am to buy an alright game that was released on time.
Furthermore, there are instances where the developers have been given extra time and abused it by working on trivial matters, while details in a game are very nice when used appropriately they are not needed if the main game is bad, if a game has a great main part, such as gameplay, story, etc. I'm not going to worry about the little tiny things, if publishers give developers extra time the developers need to use it effectively.
Another issue I have had in recent years is the problem of rapid release games. There is no reason for developers or publishers to release games every year, in my opinion it is utterly absurd, any company that releases a game every year should stop focus on the number of games they release and start focusing on the quality of games they release. Any non-mainstream publisher/developer has the philosophy of making good games not making lots of games, now I have nothing against mainstream publishers I like plenty of games from mainstream publishers and developers but the idea of releasing a game every year to keep the [censored] (and girls) happy needs to stop, it is better to have people that play your game because it's good than it is to have people play your game because it has a mainstream logo plastered to the side of it. If developers released a game every two or three years that would be fine as long as they put the effort into creating a good game. Given, yes I do prefer some series over others, but I attempt to avoid buying a game simply because it has a name that I like plastered on it. I admit I am guilty of that, but haven't we all bought a game that was the sequel to another game we enjoyed only to find the sequel was a piece of crap?
Simply put, I'm tired of dealing with publishers and developers not putting their time into their games, it needs to end now, many games have been ruined by publishers obsession with money and developers abuse of extra time, all I'm saying is that they should focus on making a few good games rather than focusing on making a lot of ok games.
