Top 10 Reasons (imo) Skyrim is better than Morrowind & O

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 4:38 pm

I would like to first say that this topic is in no way to start any kind of war or flamming any game. As a fan of TES I love all the games extensively. I would also like to say that tis is my own opinion and if you have your own thoughts, please share hem below, as I would like to have a friendly discussion on all related gamelay and favorite things.

One last thing to note is I have played each game a huge amount of hours, so all of my comparrisons are imo reasonable.
Anyway, here's the list, as well as, some explanation on each one. I didn't want to just list things without giving any explanation as to why, something that Michael Bay needs to take a lesson or two on. (sorry couldn't resist)

For some reason the post got rid of all my explanations of why I choose the this. I gave explanations for them all but now they are gone, oh well, I'll elaborate again. Also, this list is in no particualr order, I just wrote down 10 things.

1. The World
Morrowind had a great world, and when I played it when it came out it was very foriegn and felt like a totally unique, alien-like world. That was great and all cause it didn't seem like a medievel type game, but it was. However, either due to graphical limitations or from what that region actually had it was very brown and dusty. It either rained all the time or there was only volcanoes, deserts, or swamps. What little forests there were, felt so baren and boring. That's why Skyrim is better. It was more colorful, more detailed, and more interesting to admire and journey through. Oblivion had some of this, but ot was also very average and nothing really stood out nearly as much as Skyrim's. I'm not comparing graphics because when Borrowind came out it had really good graphics at that time, as did Oblivion. So comparing them in graphics is not fair.

2. The Music
The music is the same, if not better. Including the ambient and SFX it just sounds crisper and more accurate. Hearing peopel talking, howls, birds, and many other things, just add to the immersion and make you feel like you are in the game.

3. The Combat
The combat is better because you can actually mix and match many abilties, and they added things like finishers, bashing, bashing with a bow, even though it's not very effective, it's a nice addition.

4. Magic & Melee
Mixing magic and melee in the sense you can see and equip magic in your hands and interchange them. This not only makes the game more fun to mess around with spells or fighting more intense, it also creates a flow that the other two games didn't seem to have.

5. A Favorites List
The favorite list is better, because well the other two games didn't have any. Yeah it's still hampered by the UI, and if you have too many items it svcks scrolling through them, but because this feature is absent from the other games, it's a better game for it.

6. Dragons!
Dragons! They don't need to be explained.

7. NPC's
NPC's, not in the sense of UI, as that changes over the years, but by what they say, act, and do. Each person seems to have a better story or info into their lives. They crowd around, talk to each other, and the game gives you plenty of side things to do with them to make you feel like you and them co-exist.

8. The Loot Buffs
The loot buffs are better and worse, in that yes they took out several spells and such fro mthe other games, but they also added more in regards to abilities and such like alchemy or smithing. This I think makes the loot less useless than all the chests full of staves or amulets I had.

9. Quests Both Side and Main
The quests are better, partly because of the hand-drawn interiors and dungeons, and the fact that I can't remember a single quest from Morrowind that really stood out and had a unique story to it. Oblivion had much more, liek the painting quest and such, but immo Skyrim just has so much more and very unique quests that are more than just fetch or escort missions.

10. Perks
Perks is last because this was one thing I wish the other games had. These alone contribute to making the game far deeper and added plenty or replayability. Any game that has this to offer, is going to be better.

Again, this is all just my opinion, and I would like to hear others.

I disagree on number 2. The Music
I also think some of the side quests in Oblivion were awesome, at least on par with the best of Skyrim.

1. lol - Morrowind had a far better imagined setting - Skyrim is very much Viking saga lite
2. nope - I would rank them all equal
3. Nope - about the same as OB really though the UI make Skyrim worse
4 OK you can do this in Skyrim but really was it needed - now there's no distinction between melee characters or magic users
5. Nope - hot keys were way better - Skyrims system is bad
6. Not a reason imho
7. NPCs - Hmm so far a improvement from what I've see so agree so far (still bugs though)
8. Nope
9. Nope really seeing that much of a difference so far and imho Shivering isle was better
10. improved load times - I agree with this bu can also see the reason why due to less detailed textures etc in Skyrim

I think that they kind of simplified the game a little. It doesn't have that mathematical feel that I was used to in Oblivion. I also feel like they left out a large amount of spells. I like the perk tree idea but it makes it a little simplistic.

I was origionally going to poke fun at this as saying 1-10: The Game.
But the dual wielding is pretty awesome.
The world is massive like Morrowind was (I thought Oblivion was a little constrictive)
I actually like the leveling system better. No stats.
Dragons go without saying.
Combat feels great. Challenging but winnable.
Love the multiple epic parrallel storylines. Dragons and the Politics of Skyrim at the same time. Good stuff!
I think the actual background mechanics are awesome as well. Oblivion took me 2 hours or downloading drivers, patches, and finally editing to program files to run past the emperors intro.
Music and sound is fantastic. When the dragon fight music starts up and you hear the roar overhead it gets me so amped.

All in all. I love this game. Im with Adam Sessler from XPlay, this may be the greatest interactive experience ever created.

Mmm, Morrowind is still #1 for me. Skyrim is beautiful and immersive, but Morrowind just had that pizzazz, that complete feeling of "differentness" that still totally sets it apart from other RPGs.

i feel the same way. i actually thought this to myself after the first couple of hours in skyrim.

however, there are still a few things i miss from morrowind. its the unique environment (even though it wasnt as well-made as the environment in skyrim) and the more variation in weapons and skills (do i need to say - spear?)

5. Nope - hot keys were way better - Skyrims system is bad

No flipping way! You only had 8 choices. I can favorite my attire now, or different amulets, or potions, whatever I like. It is so much more friendly to the player and the game. Vastly superior to the old Hotkey thing.

What load times?

Seriously, I barely have time to hear the first drum beat when the Bethesda logo flashes and the game is already loaded.

1 - Opinions*- not everyone prefers giant mushrooms to grand mountains - Skyrim has better visuals technically speaking though.
2 - Opinions*
3 - I don't see how the UI is involved in combat, the only difference is that you have both hotkeys and favorites now. You can duel wield and backing up isn't OP, there is also sprint, finishers, and perks that hone your combat.
4 - Except there is, if you don't focus on one or the other, you skills will be divided and will thus be weaker in both aspects.
5 - Skyrim does have hotkeys
6 - Dragons do add a distinct dynamic to the game, and to simply ignore it is biased and ignorant.
7 - All elder scrolls have bugs
8 - Simply saying NOPE is not an arguement.
9 - Quests are in scope of story and exploration, also opinions*.
10 - Have you seen the textures in Morrowind or Oblivion? Also textures themselves do not account for the entire loading time, there is geometry, shadders, draw distance, etc.

edit- got distracted and didn't finish 4.

1. The World
Not as good as in Morrowind.
2. The Music
Morrowind is better again.
3. Combat
It's pretty dull and repetitive as in previous TES games but the game is even more combat oriented than Oblivion so it's actually worse as you spend more time doing the same 3 swings with your axe than in previous TES games.
4. Mixing Magic and Melee
This is true, it's pretty fun.
5. Favorites List
This wouldn't even be needed if the UI wasn't so awful.
6. Dragons!
They are cool at first but they get boring when you get attacked by 27th fire-breathing cliff racer.
7. NPC's
They have much less dialogue and offer pretty much no lore when compared to Morrowind.
8. Better Loot Buffs
wat?
9. Quests (All)
No house feuds, no Morag Tong etc. Morrowind wins.
10. ?
Yeah, you are pretty lost.

Put several hundred hours in Morrowind and Oblivion, and Skyrim is way better than both of them.
But how dare you say something is better than Morrowind OP, your going to start of a really devoted fan riot!

I prefer this over morrowind, even though I loved that game.

The combat is just so much more fun. Morrowind's combat blew chunks. They both have great worlds, morrowind's was more unique but Skyrim's is still fantastic.

I have been a defender of Morrowind since it's release, and I'll out right say that I enjoy Skyrim more than Morrowind. To me it IS the better game. Honestly, people hear need to stop pushing Morrowind on people. The man/woman likes (and on the thread title he/she even stated it is his/hers opinion) the game more than Morrowind and you guys attack him/her like he/she stated it like it's fact.

In my opinion Skyrim is better than Morrowind. But guess what, Morrowind still kicks [censored]. :banghead:
