Open world sandbox. Do what you like, the more you do it, the better you'll get. If you ever get stuck or want to know more, read up about it on UESP (once the games been out a while that site will be better than any strategy guild you'd have to PAY for!)

A common stuff that new players do and (imo is a mistake) is to go and attack any npc , or steal stuff in front of npcs, then they say that the game is bad because everyone wants to kill them :P

Take it slowly talk to npcs , explore , and have fun , don't forget to feed the mudcrabs with cake! :)

Hey sorry I tried to do this in three word responses and failed.

I started playing in 2002 with TES 3: Morrowind.

Typically Fighter characters are easier to start with, but choose whatever appeals to you. My first character was a rogue/assassin (custom class though) bosmer (wood elf) race, and has always been my main/favorite character in TES games. So go with your "gut" instinct, or whatever appeals to you.

I also recommend you don't follow the main quest line for awhile. I think you really enjoy and get more out of the game at first if you don't just race through to beat the main quest. I did not do this, but my friends who did seemed to not really enjoy the game(s), or get as much out of the games as I always have. This is just my opinion though!

Therefore I would recommend following up the other factions in the game such as the mages, guild, fighters guild, dark brotherhood, thieves guild, and more!

The glory of TES games is to just do whatever you damn please!

Don't play Daggerfall unless you want to constantly ask why every single game after it svcks entirely.

Play on easy

Enjoy while lasts (the feeling of knowing nothing. Before long you'll know everything about the game, and wish the open adventure feeling would come back)

Read in-game books.

Talk to NPC's.

Choose an ally / companion.

Rest before fighting.

Learn alchemy fast.

Look for traps.

Don't kill chickens.

Avoid the Dragons (at lower levels).

EDIT: and SAVE YOUR GAME A LOT !!!

There isn't a real way to play.. I know that it is vague and not something you might want to hear but you can do what you please at any given time during the game... If you liked the GTA series or any sandbox game.. You will love the elder scrolls series ( skyrim ) if your in to the mythical stuff wizards, warriors, imps, dragons, wraith's, trolls, goblins and many more.. As far as spells go you can be a knight they have some spell casting, Battle mage you can wield a sm sword, ax, mace anything small while having some spell casting abilities.. If you want something that is more hardcoe like a mage ( wizard ) you might want to go with a Altmer ( high elf ) race your abilities be more gear toward your mana ( which helps you cast spells also known as magica )..

I would recommend you buy a strategy guide.. It would help you out on a lot of questions you may have about things about the game that you may encounter that your not sure of.. The world of skyrim is Big and there is a lot of places to explore.. over 300 hrs ( around 40 hrs of the story ) of game play not to mention the you can repeat doing the same dungeons over and over until your content..

Make multiple characters.

To elucidate: You aren't gonna figure it out on the first play through, so just make a big dumb Nord on your first go through and never shy away from up and making a new character when your current character starts to bore you.
