Transferring shows on DVR

Post » Sat Sep 01, 2012 10:49 am

Alright, I'll make this quick.

I had a friend record some shows for me on his DVR (We both have Dish Network). Is it possible for me to hook an external HDD or flash drive to his DVR and then put them on my DVR? I really don't feel like staying at his house for twenty something hours to watch the entire series. :P

There are ways to get the stuff off the DVR and onto HDD or disc for PC/dvd viewing, but I'm not sure about putting it back onto another DVR.

Putting it on a disc would work as well.

I don't know how Dish Network's DVRs work. Some DVRs are specifically designed not to allow content to be copied from them...either by not providing a method to do it or by encrypting the data with a key unique to the DVR unit. They don't want people dumping their DVR data to a PC and sharing via bittorrent, etc. if they can help it. If you can copy the files off you'll most likely end up with a MPEG-2, MPEG-4, or H.264 transport stream file that you'll most likely have to convert or view on a computer. Some blu-ray players might play the files without any help, but that's really going to depend on the player. Does the DVR have a USB or Firewire port on it? Do you know the model # of the unit?

Yup. My DVR and HDD are tide together. I can record stuff, but it can only be played on my DVR. Hell, I have to have an account open even. When I transferred my cable service during a move, I couldn't even watch what I recorded on my own DVR until the cable was hooked up here. Seeing it was a long weekend, I was not impressed.
