http://www.hbo.com/true-blood/index.html is a show on HBO which is about vampires making their presence known to humans after a substitute for blood is created. The show takes place mostly in the Southern US around Bon Temps, Louisiana. Although the main focus is about vampires there are also many other supernatural creatures involved. Werewolves, fairies, witches, maenad, shapeshifters, werepanthers, they're all in there.

Was laughing pretty hard when Reverend Newlin came out of the closet. Was also hoping Tara would stay dead. She really does have nine lives.

I'm in the UK and over here series 4 has only been out on DVD a few weeks, so I haven't seen any of series 5 yet. (Bought S4 the day it was out.) I wasn't as impressed with this series as the ones before it, but there were some excellent cliffhangers. I found myself shouting, "that can't be how it ends!"

Has anyone read the books? The TV series didn't seem to be following them too closely, but I noticed a lot more elements from the books in series 4, particularly:
Spoiler
Sookie shooting Debbie, Sookie finding out she has a fairy godmother, Jason being bitten by werepanthers and Eric losing his memory through witch interference.

It will be ages before series 5 arrives in the UK though, I might re-watch all four series' again in the meantime.

I still have yet to watch all of season 4. I watched the first three episodes when they aired and then... I kind of just... lost interest. May need to stick it out though and give it a thorough watching. I really loved the show right up until that point.

What's the theme this season?

Spoiler
Steve Newlin is back?! Is he a vamp?

Theme as far as I can tell:

Vampire politics

As for your spoiler question:
Spoiler
Yes. As far as I know he doesn't have his congregation or married anymore either.

I haven't read the books but I'm pretty sure the tv show deviates from the books in some aspects.
Spoiler
I remember viewing a post saying that Lafayette was killed during that dumpster scene cliffhanger in the books

(Book Spoilers)
Spoiler
Yes, Lafayette isn't an established character at all in the books. He's just referred to as "Lafayette, the cook at Merlotte's" and he's killed almost straight away. No mention of him being Tara's cousin either, but then Tara is completely different in the books too. I like the TV series much better in that regard, they're much more interesting characters.

Good opener, IMO. The 4th season was falling flat until the very end, and I like where the series is going right now.

Not a bad start. I lost interest at some point in season 4.

So many people have died on Sookie's kitchen floor. . .

Sookie should really start her own "crime scene clean up" service, she's getting plenty of practice

Not going to spoil anything but I'd say Season 5 is possibly tossing the plot of the novels out the window of a moving car.

Not in a bad way, however. It's quite a departure, but good so far.

As someone who has never read the books would it be worth reading after the show is over you think or do you think that the show will ruin the books for me?

I read the books somewhere around the time of the first season.

At this point, I don't even recall whether I watched the show first or read the books first, but I enjoyed both. There is one very likeable character in the TV series who had a tiny role in the books, so that was slightly disappointing, but you must keep in mind, it's a different story, even if there are some places where they converge.

Yeah, like BootySweat said, the books are totally different to the TV series. They didn't follow it much, just used it for inspiration. There's about 12 books by now I think (she keeps writing more) and I read the first 8 or 9 before watching the series, and I enjoy both.

Give the first one- Dead Until Dark- a go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
