Trying to install Ubuntu on a USB drive

I have a 32GB USB drive that I want to use as a portable OS. Since Ubuntu is sort-of small I looked up how to do it and proceeded to follow the instructions. The website said to install it to /dev/sbd1, which I did, and to make sure the Master Boot Record was set to install on /dev/sbd, which I thought I did. The problem I am having (and I have tried this twice now with the same result) is that even if I tell the installer to put the boot record on the USB drive (/dev/sbd) it will instead put it on my local hard drive (/dev/sba). Is there something I am missing here or am I not able to put linux on a USB drive anymore? I can make a live instance of Ubuntu on the USB drive but when I do that it only uses 4GB of the 32 available and it doesn't run as well as the "full" install. Did I choose the wrong distro for this operation, maybe?
