Trying something different?

So we have seem some videos now and after seeing them I started to really like mages. I have never played a Mage in any game. I tried in skyrim but it just felt wrong. So for this game I'm gonna play a Mage. I actually am excited to play one. Is there a faction that is better suited for a Mage or doesn't not matter? Before I was going ebonheart nord but now I'm not sure.

Are guys trying anything different based on what you have seen? I know a lot of us always fall into the same play style so to speak. This game feels fresh and new, its starting to look like some of it has never been done before in the playstyle and combat areas. So with that said I want to try something new. I really hope the magic system is not broken. It seems to be in a lot of games that is why I never play one. Or maybe its just I like up front in your face metal to metal combat. Regardless I am not doing that this time.

Also I wonder if there is some type of lock on sytem. Or is it free aim. I really hope its free, I hate lock on systems especially when there is no option to turn them off. Does anyone know? Has that info been released?

My understanding based on the developer interviews is that anyone can use magic, but the Dark Elves have a greater aptitude or skill with magic. I'm not sure hot that equates to game play differences, but maybe the Elves will have more magicka or start off with more spells already learned.

I've always played a mage / sword warrior. I find the heavy armour is great in case you get ambushed or walk into a place that's a bit over your head. Likewise, magic can be great for both close-up or distanced attacks.

Are you playing your usual role this time? That's nice to hear I can use heavy armor and still cast spells effectively. I did this in Syrim by using enchanting. Honestly I could be any class I wanted with enchanting. I feel it almost ruined the game.

It ruined the game or made the game depending on how you look at it. As far as this game is concerned however, I can't imagine casting spells in heavy armor will be as effective as casting in robes.

While you can use heavy armor and be a mage I think the more successful mages will not be wearing heavy armor....though maybe you could wear some heavy armor pieces like bracers/gloves. of shoulder pads, or boots, however I think if you are wearing too much heavy armor your going to be restricted in how fast you can get a spell off. Of course until we get to try it all out, none of us really know. For instance I want to be a sneaky healer type of character. I am hoping I can....

Wear light armor
Use stealth and be good at it
Restoration and be good at it
Dual short swords or daggers
Archery for long ranged stealth kills in PvP
Pet perks
Speechcraft
And if I can still do more I will choose probably Destruction magic

Dunmer certainly aren't the best mages, they're more of your 'jack-of-all-trades' (though I suppose in this game they'll be the mages of the EP). Breton and Altmer are the mage-races of TES.

As for the question of combat, it won't be hard-lock. There'll be tab-targetting and "soft-locks", which pretty much just means aim-assist. I can't really describe how it'll work, just gotta wait for beta.

What not many people know is that there were soft-locks in Skyrim too, they worked great. It was very minimal aim-assist with ranged attacks but it was really for alleviating too much friendly fire and helping drive home those kill-moves in melee. Hoping the soft-lock is almost completely hidden like it was in Skyrim.
