I'm trying to try new things?

Post » Tue Oct 01, 2013 4:59 pm

When it comes to games I'm not the most adventurous person. Which is lame, cause games are about escaping reality and all that.

I decide within a few minutes whether I like a game or not. I'm the same with books and... sometimes even films too.

But it's actually worse than that. I enjoy sticking to what I know. Kinda like 'what's the point in trying *that*, when I know I will really enjoy *this*?'

But since I have a job now where I am around games 24/7 selling them to people, I thought I should maybe broaden my horizons - particularly as I have a neat staff discount :D

So basically I'd like you guys' to tell me your top games. I figure you already have an idea of the games I really love (I mean, I'm here on this forum), but I wanna push the boat out now. There's so many games I hear are 'really good' and that I should try them, and I want to but I just... don't.

Also if anyone has any tips about how to stop sticking to what I know with regards to this that'd be really helpful.

It's strange as a lot of things in life I have a really 'go for it' attitude and I do really enjoy new experiences, but there's one thing in particular (other than this with the games and books) that has actually altered my life quite drastically, and there's no way to change it. Or at least, I can't see a way I could change.. cause it's me.

I don't know... if you already know what you like, what's wrong with that? You don't need to like everything.

My top games are:

Fallout: New Vegas

Skyrim

Far Cry 3

GTA V

The entire Assassin's Creed series, but particularly Brotherhood

Minecraft (heavily modded only - can't play anymore without certain mods)

Left 4 Dead (both)

I mostly like big, open world type games where I can typically decide for myself what I want to do and how I want to do it.

I know this might seem asinine, but the key to getting yourself to try new things is to try new things. The more you do it, the more you break out of your mold. Even if it turns out you didn't like what you tried, the very act of trying it causes some cracks to develop around that self mold you have gojng on.

In terms of games? Despite your assertions to the otherwise, I have no idea what games you like. A basic idea might provide more utility to the topic.

In terms of games that cover several genres that I think are excellent?

Call of Duty. I know, I know, but I have yet to play a FPS game with slicker controls on console. It IS an arcade shooter though.
Demons Souls
Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen.
Dark Souls
Lost Odyssey.
Diablo III.
Dishonored.
Legend of Grimrock
Bastion
Kingdoms of Amalur
Assassins Creed (all of them)

No idea what games you like to be frank. Many of these may be old, even too old to get, but try to find them anyway if you can.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 4 (Do not get 5 or up, those are made by a different company with no understanding of how to make good turn based strategy games.)

ōkami

Persona 3 and 4 (possibly 1 and 2 too, I've never played those though so I can't vouch for them)

Blood Will Tell

Age of Empires 2

Dust: An Elysian Tail

Neverwinter Nights (to some the first game has aged pretty badly, might want to just try Neverwinter Nights 2)

Unfortunately I have a pretty limited liking of genres myself, but hopefully you find something there that interests you and you haven't played already. :P If you only have time or wealth to try 1 of these, make it be ōkami. It is not necessarily the best game, but I still think it's a game everyone should try.

I actually don't really know what type of games you like, other than open-world RPG's primarily if I were to guess. I'll just list some of my favourite games out of various genres.

No More Heroes and Killer is Dead (these two are mainly "different" from games I assume you like in terms of setting. Suda 51 worked on both games so... They can be pretty weird and unusual. Also they're character action/hack n' slash type games.)

Persona 3/4 (JRPGs)

Catherine (Puzzle game that's clearly made by Japanese people, but also has a pretty good story)

Condemned/Silent Hill (Horror)

Dark Souls ( a challenging Action-RPG)

Baldur's Gate (more "old-school" type of RPG. Regardless of preference, I consider it better than most "modern" RPGs even just in terms of quality)

Thief (stealth)

Shadow of the Collosus (open-world... hard to group into a specific genre)

It depends on what games you like in the first place, but I'd say games made by Suda 51 are about as "different" as you can get :P

I always liked the Final Fantasy series, though many people say that the series started going downhill with X. I myself recommed FFIX, if you like a fantasy-ish setting, and FFVII/FFVIII, if you prefer a more modern setting.

The Legend of Zelda is a pretty fun series. Play Ocarina of Time to get a general idea of the later game's gameplay.

I don't have much to suggest, really. I don't exactly have that broad preference of game genres myself, though I've been trying to rectify that as well. :)

No. Try not.

Do...or do not.

There is no try.

:D

It would help if you listed the games you do like then we can suggest stuff that's beyond your comfort zone.
