Two questions regarding SMAA vs FXAA Injector

Post » Thu Aug 16, 2012 3:40 am

I'll make it real quick;

1) What is better, forced SMAA or the FXAA that comes alongside the FXAA post process injector?

2) Are they compatible together? I've seen people using several different kinds of AA at once.

Thank you!

I dunno about whether or not they can be used together, but in my experience I've found SMAA to provide a superior picture quality than FXAA while having no effect on my framerate.

1) really dependent on taste, but I've found SMAA to provide better image quality. HOWEVER, it does distort UI text slightly (by no means is it unreadable, but some might find it obnoxious).

2) They're not really compatible with one another, no. I don't think it would screw up the image if you tried, but stacking would either provide no noticeable benefit or not work at all.

1. SMAA has slightly less total blurring but misses some jaggies that FXAA catches.
2. The injectors are not compatible as both are d3d9.dll files and such only one can be present in the game directory at a time, theoretically I believe one could load both as proxy libraries with ENB. Additional AA can be applied through the game launcher for MSAA and a low-quality FXAA and other options can be forced through GPU drivers.

They seem to be working together decently. Although I have FXAA quality set to maximum via the FXAA Tool.

I do have a question though, I've always noticed this since I got Skyrim, but I seem to have really weird microstutters when in 1st person view and moving forward, it feels like I'm shooting forward a few steps from time to time, its really weird and I dont experience it in 3rd person view.

Anyone know whats wrong with that?
