Two small game Hehaviors i just don't understand

I absolutely love this game. I truly believe it's one of the best games ever mad, and it really supersedes the term "game". It's a beautiful work of art and i love it to death. Ok so this is the first Elder Scrolls game i've played. Before this, i just watched my brother play the previous ES titles, always thinking they looked cool but might have been a bit out of my league. But now, Skyrim has captured me and i'm amazed.

That being said, i have two tiny gripes:

With all the hard work and beautiful, often subtle detail carved into this game, i simply just don't understand a few of the character mechanics:

1. The way your character moves when in 3rd person POV. Why did they choose to have your guy pivot at 90 degree angles (with the WASD keys) with no animation? It looks cheap, and frankly takes a bit away from the realism that i am always seeking when playing Skyrim. There were similar things like this in Fallout 3 that always bugged me, and i always hoped Bethesda would improve upon them in their next title. I see how such an animation could impede on the smoothness of movement of your character (playing Fable3 for example), but i believe if Bethesda can put the amount of detail into the world that they did, they could figure something out to get around this. Some kind of animation could work. I just like to have as much realism in a game as possible when the game deliberately aims to provide such an experience.

2. When talking to a NPC, why can't your character's head turn toward them, like they're actually having a real conversation? I can't help but be distracted by my character sometimes staring into space when i'm in a dialogue with an NPC, which sometimes takes my attention away from what they're saying, and as a new player of ES, i'm trying desperately to keep up with all the dialogue i encounter, which sometimes seems to be referencing the previous ES titles. So many names, SO many names to remember.

These things seem like they would be easy to implement into the game. I just wonder, why sell yourself short (even though it's pretty miniscule) when you have crafted such an incredible title?

Thoughts and insights are welcome and looked forward to.

it is a first person game, 3rd is just tacked on to please people who like it (and forced, in some parts [horse ridding is 3rd right? i will always avoid it anyway], to annoy those who dont)

Because animation has never been one of Bethesdas strengths. They have improved immensely on their previous games in this area but I guess its just not their focus.
