Ugly landscapes and Texture flickering ..

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 6:09 pm

Hi , I just got skyrim and as soon I was done with the beginning quest I and entered skyrim I noticed That the mountain tops would flicker horribly. The same thing that happened to me in fallout new vegas. I think its called z-fighting.I have no idea how to get rid of it . It makes the game un playable in certain areas. Also Ive noticed the landscape Looks horrible when its far away. For example tree's wont Load , Some buildings won't The landscape is un detailed and un rendered i guess , and i get pop-ins . Even up close the tree's dont look good nor have any shadows.(I know tree shadows are disabled by default). I don't think it should be happening because Im running the game maxed with 4xaa Super sample , and 16AF .
Also when I look at close up mountains they tend to have these little dots everywhere that almost glisten when i move. Im also running skyrim HD 2k textures and Enb graphics fix. Still no luck. I even turned off aa and tweaked the ini a little bit. Nothing helps. Please help me fix these issues . They made fallout new vegas un playable and now skyrim is too. (drivers are updated).

My specs are
i7 2600k @ 3.4 ghz
His Iceq 6970
8gb Ddr3 ram
1tb hdd

I still have issues with distant terrain flickering, but managed to solve some of the pop in with the ugridstoload tweak. Also, tree and landscape shadows have to be activated from skyrimprefs, not the launcher.

I have the z-fighting issue as well and it by no means makes the game 'unplayable' for goodness sake. If it really bothers you that much, you can resolve it by reducing the distant terrain quality from ultra to medium or low.

Well the only other thing you can do (that I'm aware of at least), is to lower your distant terrain quality enough that the problem mountains have lower LOD, which resolved it for me. But the issue wasn't all that bad for me, I only had it in patchy areas on the mountains ringing Whiterun Hold.

Did you change ugrids to load? Or did anything else in your ini?

Not sure, it may help or may not, but have you tried my AntiFREEZE patch? http://enbdev.com

Yes I have Your Anti Freeze patch . Un fortunately it did not fix the flickering. And turning the Mountains Down to low makes it look horrible. I really hope their's a patch for this or a driver update or mod.. Even when I was at the top of the Throat of the world , I looked down and the landscape it self far away for ex. the rivers flickered horrible. I guess it has to do with Low res textures ?? Because When Im up close to a mountain and its fully loaded it doesn't do that.. Idk anymore. Thanks for the help and for the patch.

Edit : I tried u grids to load at 11 and it causes flickering everywhere on everything. I might try to set it to 7 to see if that works.

So you are saying, before installing these mods and tweaks, your distant land flickered just as bad with vanilla textures and settings? I did notice some flickering, but only a certain mountain, viewed from Whiterun,, but it seems like your problem is somewhere else.
Did you update your DirectX?

The landscape is un detailed and un rendered i guess , and i get pop-ins .

A clear indication of a settings-related/hardware related problem.

Be aware, you cannot reverse the ugridloads, just on the go, the game will crash on startup. You have to keep your 11 settings, go into the console mode while the game is on and reset it back to normal.

I got mountain flicker everywhere is well. It indeed makes the game kind of unplayable, because there's no way you can enjoy the game with it.

I know what is causing the problem though.
You can get rid of ALL mountain flicker by typing "fNearDistance=90.0000" in Skyrim.ini under [General] section. BUT, this causes other issues which I'm sure you'll notice (try going close to an object and you'll know what I'm talking about). The default value is fNearDistance=15.0000, and the more you increase it, the less mountains flicker. Try it.
The more you increase it also though, the more the other issues become noticable. If you want to reduce the mountain flicker a little WITHOUT having any other issues by increasing this number, I recommend having fNearDistance=25.0000 or something. The flicker is a little reduced, and you suffer no other side-effect issues that are noticable.

I think that the problem with Skyrim is that there is SUPPOSED to be a fFarDistance setting, but there isn't. It was removed. If that setting would be there, I think that we would be able to get rid of all flicker completely, while having no side-effect issues. I'm far from sure though.

It's these values, at least, that the flicker is directly connected to. Ethatron knows more.

@ Sarmatian _ I did that a while ago and since then i deleted that skyrim ini plus save. I have it set to default 5 now. Hlvr , Ill try that. BTW could drivers have anything to do with it ? I'm running 11.12 drivers ? I saw a thread with crossfire cards and how the 12.1 drivers caused massive flickering in skyrim. But i guess that's different. Ive heard of people getting rid of stuff like this by downgrading drivers. BTW How come Some people have flickering- Massively and others Don't so much. I mean If some people don't have it. Does that mean it can be fixed . ? thanks for the replies

Edit: also I did have flickering in vanilla skyrim . Not just In white run , out side it when viewing any far away mountains from anywhere. This made fallout nv unplayable , never thought it happen to skyrim..
Edit #2 : yeah i got dx11

Some people say updating drivers solved it. I have my drivers fully updated. I've tried messing with forced driver settings as well. None have worked.

I don't know why some have and other's don't. All I know is that the game becomes very unenjoyable for those of us who have it :(

One Last thing . I did distant object detail to medium - Looks bad but bearable . fNearDistance=25.0000 . those 2 combined.

The flickering outside of whiterun decreased alot. Its not really a fix though since its technically not being stopped.. oh well Ill take what i can get until its hope fully fixed
