Umm... Companion with a staff?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 11:58 pm

First time I've ever seen this, and this is about my 6th time playing through the Companions quest line. He suddenly pulled out a a staff of sparks (I think) at the end of the first Silver Hand quest....

Farkas does some strange things. I haven't seen the staff before, but I've seen him pickup and use a bow, as well as drop his (better) Skyforge Steel claymore for a silver one dropped by the Silver Hand.

My mage companions have always been happy to use a staff if i give it to them (often one in each hand), but thats the first time ive seen HIM use a staff.

Melee companions will use staves, but mage ones won't. I gave Marcurio and J'zargo a good staff and they'd run up and punch people when they ran out of magicka. Whereas Borzhag uses the staff I give her all the time. It's a mystery.

He's a silly one. I was amazed to see him zapping things with sparks.

Erandur will use the staffs I give him. He still defaulted to a melee weapon occasionally, but once I took them away he uses his staff all the time.

Farkas may be a simple man, but he is willing to try new things! Or maybe he just didn't realize that it isn't a weapon. "Hey! Whenever I swing this stick this white stuff comes out of it!"

Well what shocked me was that I can't give him new stuff at this point, this was an independent Farkas experiment with magic.

Same thing happened with me. I think it was in item maybe in that particular quest that he picked up or something. Maybe it was on one of all those Draugr. I think it happened to me at the end of that quest in the room where they keep coming out of the crypts. all of a sudden sparks were flying and I looked for the Draugr who was doing it and it was Farkas or whatever his name is with the staff in his hand.

It's weird. J'zargo I've given about a dozen different staves to; and I've yet to see him use one - even though the skyrim wiki reckons it's a good idea to give him one. (I Eventually took to using the console to expand his spellbook a bit. At level 50 he really shouldn't be spamming sparks on a draugr uber-deathboss over-murderlord)

Ha! I figured those Winterhold mages were weak, so I never bothered with them. I've primarily used Lydia, Jordis, or Illia (mage) and all three of them will dual wield staffs (staves just doesn't seem an appropriate plural for these) if they have them. Npcs/followers can also be quicker than you than to pick up dropped weapons, so if you've ever thought "where the hell did they get that from?", they grabbed a dropped item before you could.

completely off topic, but my last good guy tried to join the companions, First time I've tried it after 4 characters.
He gets there and has to go thru the initiation, Except a certain female walks right thru as I'm being initiated. And she's saying something really nasty. I completely accidently hit her.
"you'll pay for this"
"you"ll be sorry you ever showed up here" or whatever.

I got killed by them.. Never went back.

every follower i have used, uses staffs. not sure what kind of staff you're giving em, but i give em chain lighting, frost storm or fireball staffs and they definately use em to great effect..i give my followers like 2 or 3 staffs each.

It's a summon flame atronach. I wouldn't have thought much about it except as soon as I got rid of the two mages and picked up Borgakh, she started summoning little fire ladies left and right.

My Lydia likes to dual-wield Staves of Frostbite against Frost Trolls (and pretty much *everybody*) instead of using her Ebony War Axe of Paralyze, so I took the Staves away from her. Bad Lydia!

Mjoll just recently started using a staff of Fireballs I had given her awhile back. At first I was like "WOAH WOAH WHAT THE [censored] IS SHOOTING FIREBALLS AT ME" then I saw that I wasn't getting hit by them, and I looked behind me to see the beloved wife holding the staff with that goofy look on her face, and was like "Oh."

You don't say!

Always keep your any found staffs, companions make great use of them in my experience. Just watch it with multiple followers/summons and the AOE staffs like Fireball. Causes lots of in-fighting due to friendly fire issues.

I just found that out yesterday when Farkas and I were clearing out Dustman's Cairn, of course Farkas reminded me yet again why I always travel alone. Man I wish for once a follower would actually FOLLOW your lead, it would be so great.

Its also strange on dead thralls as well.
Orchendor seems to really enjoy using the sanguine rose but other mage companions rarely use it and instead summon freaking atros -__-

Personally i think it might have to do with the person's skill in that particular field of magic. In this case if i remember orchendor has only 15 conjuration and therefore would use the staff.

I've seen my Farkas open the chest at the end of the Dustman's Cairn dungeon and use the staff of sparks inside.
