Unable to Advance QuestsUse "X" Key

Greetings,

I'm currently having a serious issue with Skyrim at the moment. I fully understand that Bethesda released the game a wee bit prematurely, and bugs/glitches are more than expected. However, at this point in the game... there's little to nil that I can accomplish. I'm level 45 - Play Time: 094.37.16, Save File of 9634KB. I have recently gone back to the Thieves Guild in Riften, and have decided to partake in the quests to fully restore the guild. Up until this point, the game had only crashed once (I still had the auto-saves turned on, they have long been turned off), and I have little to no lag. I'm at the point now where I must present Ri'saad with the moon sugar for the fence, yet, I cannot continue in the quest line. He states that I am to head back and inform the fence... however, the quest will not update. Prior to leaving the Thieves Guild for this mission, I attempted to "get work" from Delvin and Vex as well; alas, it would not allow me to receive the quests. Attempting to try and reset the quest, I headed back to Riften (fast traveled to the Thieves Guild - placed in front of that sliding crypt). Now, when I try and click on the small shadowmark in order to open the floor, I cannot select it. It's highlighted, and tells me "X - Press Button," but I cannot. Items in homes, on shelves - such as the "Stones of Barenziah," I cannot pick-up. It's saddening... it's such an amazing game. Reminds me of my ol' EverQuest days. However, this is immensely frustrating.

Any ideas? I have no clue where to go with this one. At the worst, I guess Skyrim get's shelved for a year or so, eh? }:

I get this. it seems to be about quest prioritising. If you revert to an earlier save. One where your USe functions work. Then head off to a major quest you know has been hanging around a long time in waiting, complete that. You will find you can go back to the quest you are on and continue. If you do not get back to the thieves guild to continue after you complete the old quest in waiting. You will have the same problem until you do go back to Riftin and complete it. Hope that helps some mate.

Paladinrja,

I believe I understand what you're saying, however, I have no earlier auto-save.... (Due to auto-save being turned off, I only possess one immensely large manual-save.) Could I possible continue on quests such as "Find the Redguard woman" that I acquired in the beginning of the game?

Sadly, I still do not understand as to why I am unable to open doors, and select items on shelves.

Anyone else?

You only used one single save file for the entire game? This is a tough way to learn the most important lesson you'll ever learn in an Elder Scrolls game - use multiple saves, at a bare minimum a rotation of three or four. Just in case something like this very situation happens.

Wilco64256,

Alas, I've never played the prior titles. However, I did read up on the lore. Never would have believed multiple save files were necessary. I suppose I was terribly wrong. Simply trying to correct the issue, and continue. Maybe, I'll simply have to shelve the game until Bethesda releases a few patches.

Ahh that svcks . I learned back with Morrowind to keep a 3 file rotation . I keep one at least 5 hours back , one at the start of a quest , and one to save on during quests .

I've been working a double, and have not been able to attempt Paladinrja's tactic as of yet... however, any other suggestions before I try tomorrow?

MBP,

In all honesty, I wish I had learned of the "safety" of multiple save files prior to turning off the auto-save option. /sigh **facepalm**

110 save points on my system at the moment and counting. :D

The bad news is that any patch will have a hard time fixing data that is stored within your savegame because that affects save / patch backwards compatability which needs to be preserved.

So even shelving until final fix (possibly) is released may not solve your issues.

Prowler690,

Are you stating that it would most likely make more sense to roll a new character, for patch reasons? I love my character, and it would be a shame to throw away almost 100 hours of play.

Back up your character to a USB device before starting a new game just in case I get proved wrong and broken user data gets fixed so you could continue.

With your new game keep several saves so if something breaks you have a chance to rretry or branch to avoid this time round.

Story Mission FREEZE!

********-Spoiler Alert-********

I'm playing the PS3 version. I'm trying to do the Quest named Diplomatic Inmmunity. When I speak with Delphine and put the Party Clothes on and speak to her again to get into the carriage, after she finish talking the game Frezzes everytime. I have done this over 10 times and I have to shut down the PS3.

I have follow every tips the forum told. I disabled the Auto-Save (deleted them too), Waited several hours etc. but this thing keep happening over and over again. Anyone else having the same Issue? Any reccomendations?

GobRazor,

You're pretty much experiencing the same problem that I am. I am, as well, on the quest "Diplomatic Immunity," and I can not progress through the conversation with her. **Raises an ale** Here's to the hopes Bethesda's patches will correct broken user data. Until then, I may or may not create a new character.

WoW's looking good again, and that's saying a great deal. Kung Fu Panda! >.>

***UPDATE***

It's 12/25/11, and I randomly decided to start up my file... in hopes that the issue had auto-corrected itself. Surprisingly, it had. /shrug lol :)
