Unable to save without CTD

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:21 am

As of yesterday, I'm no longer able to save without a CTD before the save gets created/overwritten. It happens whether I'm quicksaving, hard saving, or when CASM autosaves. In addition to the mods listed below, I'm also using NVSE, FNV 3GB Enabler Plus, and FNV Enhanced Shaders. Anybody have something like this happen to them?

Kill yourself, then try to save again. (Really, not kidding.)
But you have to kill yourself whenever you restart a new game. So it's kind of boring. I recommend you to check your load order and mods via FNVEdit. Because generally this issue is a result of a confliction in your load order.

Thanks, killing myself seems to have worked. I'll check out my LO though.

Also I forgot to tell, if you do not have a Merged Patch. Try to create one via FNVEdit. It automatically creates a built-in merged patch but also I recommend you to merge esp/esm files manually. In addition sometimes using MasterUpdate module of FNVEdit solves this issue.

Imp, you may have tried this already, but have you tried saving through the console?

Just open the console and type:

Save X

With x being the name of your save (without and spaces in the name).

I have found these saves to be the most stable, and the easiest for me to keep track of.
Plus you can load a saved game really fast, in the same way (just replace "save" with "load").

One thing that could be causing this is if one of the plugins deletes vanilla references instead of disabling them... try using fnvedit's undelete and disable function on any plugins you're not sure about. Probably wouldn't hurt to clean them while you're at it.

I've heard cleaning mods can screw up navmeshes. I've recently had this problem and it was caused by a corrupted spawn, disabling the mod and cleansaving then renabling the mod fixed it.

would be nice if we had some sort of list of dirty mods. ive installed quite a few recently and am getting some random and saving CTDs now too whereas i previously had a very stable game. ill try the suggestions in this thread thanks.

A list like that would be great, it's a pretty easy thing to fix once you've identified the dirty edits. Killing my character that one time seems to have fixed the save crashing problem, but my game is far from stable. A merged patch might also help - I've been making patches by hand on a mod by mod basis so far, so that I know what's being done and don't have to recreate the patch when I change my load order, but I'm sure there's stuff that I've missed.

Just tried that, and the result: FNV now crashes at the load screen.

What you suggested shouldn't have caused problems, not sure what went wrong. I went ahead and reinstalled my mods into a clean FNV directory, and while it fixed that load screen CTD, as well as some other bugs that had been bothering me, the CTD on save is still happening. I'm going to try cleaning some of my more recently installed mods to see if that helps (one at a time so I can easily reverse anything that totally throws things out of whack).

Edit - The culprit seems to have been ELECTRO-CITY - CompletedWorkorders.esp. Cleaning it didn't help, but I guess I can do without it.

If I had to guess, you dont have the latest version of it? A few versions back had a ctd issue, I think it was resolved though. Might want to check it out :-)

I didn't when I first started having the problem, but updated last night and it didn't help. The Highways and Byways .esp is OK, it's just the Completed Work Orders that I'm having trouble with. Looking over their comments page I didn't see anyone else with the same problem, and in trying to locate the .esp causing the crashes I ended up finding it before I'd disabled every mod I had, so it could be a conflict rather than just that .esp by itself.

Are you sure its not with Electro City, URWL NV as well?

Best option, shove Electro City to the bottom of the load list

[X] URWLNV.esp
[X] NSkies - URWLNV.esp
[X] Nights are Darker 25%.esp
[X] ELECTRO-CITY - Highways and Byways.esp
[X] ELECTRO-CITY - CompletedWorkorders.esp
\Try this:

[X] ELECTRO-CITY - Highways and Byways.esp
[X] ELECTRO-CITY - CompletedWorkorders.esp
Electro City Nevada Skies
[X] URWLNV.esp
[X] NSkies - URWLNV.esp
[X] Nights are Darker 25%.esp

I also saw NV Skies ESM. Delete it. :) you don't need it.
Scratch, I saw the ESM instead of the ESP. I'd recommend deleting that, and use the one that comes with Electro City, just place it below Electro City. And do you have the Weather Addons turned off as well?

I've just got the same issue, never had it before. When I enter Nipton, trying to save, Fallout crashes. Also a few other locations gives me the same problem. Have been trying to deactivate mods, without any luck. Frankly, im getting tired of this.. Would appreciate any help.

Have you tried a MasterUpdate with FNVedit ? The crash on save reminds me of the save corruption problem of FO3 where killing your character was one way to fix the problem, masterupdating was the other. Also, since I've began to use the purge cell buffer esp, I've had far fewer chrashes than before.

I want to use electro city, but even following the instructions to the letter,
it gave me CTD's galore, anything from entering a motel room in Novac would result in a CTD,
to walking from the NCR outpost at the bottom left of the map until I could see one of the street lights working
and that would cause a CTD.
Then they just got worse, to where I'd load a game, and once the game was fully loaded it would just CTD without
me even moving.

I'd love to use the mod, but currently it's not friendly with my particular setup

Masterupdate and profit. It's absolutely essential to do when you have mods that alter cells and worldspace in any way.

I'm pretty confident when it comes to putting together a merged patch and/or compatibility patches for mods. I'm totally clueless when it comes to resolving cell and worldspace edits though. I was going to try just moving that ElectroCity .esp to the end of my load order to see if that helps, but I'll give Masterupdate a try while I'm at it. I'd really like that mod to work for me.

To be honest your LO is somewhat troublesome, especially in terms of visual mods. For example you have Nevada Skies, URLNV and NSkies - URWLNV in there. Get rid of those esps and only use http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39686. Also it's pretty important lighting and weather mods go at the very bottom of your load order, otherwise many of their lighting and weather changes are overwritten by other mods.

So Electro City should go pretty far to the bottom, followed by Nevada Skies - URWLified.esp.

But none of this will fix CTDs. Masterupdating will.

Ok, I moved most of my world changing mods to the end of my load order, with ElectroCity and URWLified coming last. Also MasterUpdated everything, and installed that cell buffer purge mod. The CTDs seem to have gone away :)

I'm in the process of putting together a Nevada Skies/Ambient Temperature patch, so I've been looking over Nevada Skies a lot in FNVEdit and was pretty confident that nothing in my load order (other than URWL) was overriding it. Can't hurt to put it later though.
