Unarmed vs Melee ?

Post » Fri Dec 03, 2010 9:53 pm

Ok, so i've finished the game with guns(sneaky snipey kinda guy) and i started a new one with EW.I hate it ...playing on hard+hardcoe and have too shoot stuff for like one minute to kill them(and i mean weak animals like geckos etc.).I mean i like difficult games, but this is more boring then hard ...So im starting a new character and i'd like to try unarmed.I need some advice, unarmed or melee ? p.s. sry for spelling but im writing from my mobile.

I'd advise going for both to be honest. That's the only way to get the best out of the perks.

Overall though they're fairly equal. So if you're going to pick one or the other, you can't really go wrong either way.

Both for the sake of perks.
I'm playing an unarmed character right now. (Only 5 hours in though)

Both, for perk reasons, regardless of which one you actually decide to fight with.

But unarmed is the best imo, the upgrades to it are great.
At low levels I was one shotting mobs with str 8, <25 skill and brass knuckles, on hard. It felt so OP that it thought it must be bugged, compared to melee and guns requiring more than one hit to kill.

One issue is that you soon receive a lot of damage, so good armor quickly becomes important, as does being able to repair it! It will break a hell of a lot :/
This also raises the importance of healing (medicine/surv) and high Endurance for the extra HP.

You can still get them by level 30. I managed to max out Lockpick, Science, Speech, Melee and Unarmed, without hunting for books or any of that nonsense. Just make sure you start off with 10 INT, and take the Educated perk at level 4.

Christ I even bumped up my Guns skill to 45 and Explosives to 30 for the Cowboy and Heave Ho perks, and I still managed to max out the above mentioned stats.

First and Foremost,....hardcoe.

Secondly,....I travel limited and light although 10 Strength, and precious ammo like The Road but a little bit better as in the Book of Eli.

Knifes and Wrapped Fists by wayings of Melee......9mm at times on hip, 20G Slugs if needed...Single Barrell. 15 9mm rounds, 3 9mmHollow Points for close quarters.

not seen the strip as yet...and in no rush.

South by South West as far as Coyote Mine House,....Doubled back, North along the road, then West in Sloan just now....

Unarmed is so much cooler than Melee, and it seems to me there are stronger unarmed weapons than melee weapons.

I remember FO3 being very leaned towards guns, most-especially energy weapons at end-game, but it seems reversed in this one. Energy weapons are laughable and burn through ammo like nobody's business, while melee comes quick, easy, and often one-shots most humanoid mobs.

I took out a Feral Ghoul Reaver with a cross and uppercut combo. Those guys used to take entire frenzied firefights, and I just Muhammad Ali'd them. Insane.

But yeah, I'd recommend both. Having a high Unarmed, Melee, and Sneak gets you the BEST melee perks and whatnot. Especially if you have 7 Agility and get Slayer. Bumper Sword madness. :)

Melee is more useful in the early game, yet Unarmed eventually beats it out in the end, especially with Piercing Strike and such.

Up to you really. I went for a non crit build myself, and it worked out good. Again, no way to go wrong lol. Just make sure you have your Strength and Endurance maxed out at 10, or 9 if you're going for the implants. As long as you've got that you wont have any trouble, on Normal at least.

Edit: I just started the new character and .. well its so cool :) WAY better then the svcky EW, and is more satisfying to slaughter someone with your cleaver/knife then .. u know shoot 'em with laser for 30-40 seconds till they die :)
