Unofficial "Is [insert game name here] any good?"

I'm looking for a good open-world RPG and I've heard Witcher 2 is good and that it's non-linear. How is it as far as the open-world and side-content aspect?

Witcher 2 is not open-world, but it has a fair amount of side content. Also, pixel porm! (In more than one sense... wah wah. :bonk: ) It really is quite the spectacle, in a lot of ways -- story, graphics, aesthetics, music, world. It'll keep you enthralled for a good while. Get it.

(I'm a professional Necromancer, that's how I roll).

I just finished KotOR, and am on a serious Star-Wars game kick. I've played (and loved) KotOR, Dark Forces, Jedi-Knight, and Jedi Outcast. I enjoyed KotOR II, and Jedi Academy. If my old version of TIE-Fighter would run on my PC, I'd be playing that. But alas, I need a new game.

What I'd like to know, is Star-Wars: Starfighter any good? Certainly, it's no TIE-Figher, X-Wing or TIE-Fighter VS. X-Wing, let alone TIE-Fighter VS. X-Wing: Balance of Power...but anyway, is it worth the $5 on steam?

Are there any other good single player Star Wars games that I haven't mentioned (with a good price, too. I'm not paying for Force Unleashed- I don't care to pay $20 for a game that got a 65 Metascore)? If I don't get any good feedback, I'll just end up replaying KotOR as a darkside dood. (I've played my first two as Dark Side, most recent as Light...).

Well, forced unleashed 2 is alright. The demo is fun.

Why would a metascore instantly gag you away from a game?

New Vegas got an 84 and is significantly better and more truer to the fallout series than fallout 3, which got a high 90 score and had many potholes and other stupid annoyances.

I'd give the force unleashed a chance. If you don't like it, you could always ship it to me

I haven't played that game in years...it's a fun arcade like space combat flight sim I give it a go, Jedi: Starfighter is musch better though IMO.

Not if it's on Steam. And as for the Metascore thing, I think it's fairly accurate. My favorite games, like the Thief Series, Counter-Strike Series, Half-Life Series, Rome: Total War, KoTOR, CoH, Audiosurf, Jedi Knight, Morrowind, and Deus Ex all scored very well on Metascore. I'm not one of those people who is an anti-popular game for the sake of it. I like the games I like, and in general people agree. (Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is one exception. I love that game, 65 Metascore, like Force Unleashed. Force Unleashed II got a 59. )

But alas, Jedi: Starfighter isn't on Steam.

It has recently come to my attention that http://store.steampowered.com/app/48705/ exists and I'm wondering how worthwhile it is. It certainly sounds good, but I did end up disappointed by With Fire & Sword due to it not only delivering a limited range of new experiences, but lacking some important features I'd grown used to in Warband (I can't remember exactly what they were though, was a long while ago :hehe:).

So, is it Warband with guns and loads of improvements? Or is it Warband with guns, a new map, and a few bits of shiny?

AFAIK it's a multiplayer expansion only (that requires Warband) so it's different from Warband itself or F&S which were standalone and had single player.

I didn't get it, I play M&B for the single player.

If that's the case it's not so appealing -- I never really got into the multiplayer either :(.

If you like the first, pretty much the entire series is solid. Maybe not Blade Warriors, but I don't know anything about that one. While there are obviously going to be different opinions between them, for the most part the sequels are each bigger/deeper/better than the previous.

In a fit of nostalgia for my RTS loving roots, I bought Supreme Commander 2 off of Steam for $5. Some of my old favourites are Age of Empires(1, 2, 3), Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, Starcraft, Battle for Middle-Earth(1, 2) and Star Wars: Empire at War. Sound investment?

A bit late to ask how it is, but it's a decent enough RTS, especially for $5. The first is pretty widely considered superior, though, so if you like SC2 look into it.

Thanks, I might give the first one a try. I know that it was a bit late to ask, but it has been awhile since I have last played a good RTS and it's still my overall favourite genre.

Yes, but I say that begrudgingly. I liked it and think it is worth it for $15 but others claim they hate it.

This was probably already mentioned but I have heard a lot about Diablo 3 and might get it. I like a lot of non-linear story lines, a good hack and slash is something I can take, and I want to know if I should wait a little while or not. Also would I have to play constantly because I usually like to switch around on my games, thanks.

Is the Red DLC for Frozen Synapse considered an essential expansion? Like, is it Heir to the Throne or Oblivion Horse Armor? I'm really curious about Frozen Synapse, and five dollars is about the amount I'd pay to try it. But I doubt I'll be playing it constantly.

I've asked this already in the deals thread, but how is Dead Island (haha, almost typed Dead Money) as a single-player game? Are the bots decent at being teammates? Are there just less enemies like in Borderlands? Or is it like Left 4 Dead, where the game is completely tepid without other human players? Also, would you pay ten bucks for the single-player?

I can't honestly reccomend D3. I played a good bit by myself and almost 1 full act with friends. The game was a chore to get through on normal.....it was just a click fest. I must have died....twice, total. It was soooo boring.

I was told it gets better next difficulty. So I played the full first act on whatever mode is after normal. Haven't touched it in a while. I don't feel compelled or the want to play it.

I wish I had spent that money on something else. It svcks too, I was looking forward to D3.

It's good, especially at the current price. It adds co-op to the main campaign, an additional single player campaign, 6 new tracks to the soundtrack and some other stuff. Definitely no horse armor.
