Unremovable quest items are starting to weigh me down.

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:08 pm

I love to cave dive between quest lines. It's helpful to me to grab some loot, because I'll end up at a city to sell it all. Unfortunately, I'm now carrying nearly 50 pounds of items I can't get rid of until I find out the person/quest it belongs to. With only a third into the game, and about as much discovered, I'm getting the feeling it's going to take a while to find the owners.

I'm disappointed in this. I now have to actively seek out these owners just to clear my own inventory. I don't understand why Bethesda forces this upon players. Wouldn't it just be easier to allow us to store the items and block them from being sold (like stolen goods)?

I don't know what to do other than ruin my play by heading online and finding spoiler quests to dump this gear. It's 50 pounds, and my max is currenly 240. This makes it difficult to carry more loot I want to dump, especially big ticket items such as an enchanted ebony war hammer.

Since there's nothing I can do about it, I'm curious to know if others are in the same situation and what do you do to resolve it.

I haven't checked it myself but as far as I know quest items don't weigh anything (even though they have a weight value)

CCNA: Quest items don't have any effective weight in your inventory. The weight value is just used in the Physics calculations.

Back in the day, people used to lose quest items all the time. You would not believe the threads we had on how people could find or recover that one unique item they lost or misplaced or sold. I like not being able to drop a quest item until it is needed by the quest, but I would like to be able to get rid of it once that quest is done, or give me the option to fail the quest if I want to drop it (to balance it, make it so it can't be picked up again)

I do know they intend to patch out not being able to drop quest items once the quest is done, just not sure why they have not done this yet.

This.
They may remain in your inventory, but they have no weight. This can be easily tested by removing everything you can. You will see that you have a weight of 0.

It would be rather unfair for the game to force an item on you and maintain the items weight.

Yeah they don't weigh anything and I think you *can* console it - (on PC) - so you can drop 'em. Or at least you could in Obliv...

I can't name the three swords because I haven't memorized them yet. One weighs a staggering 21 pounds. I was nearly at 50 pounds before dropping Dravin's Bow, which had a weight of 7 (I knew where he was thanks to a previous game). I'm currently at 97 carry weight, and nearly half of this is due to items I can't remove.

That's a significant amount of my total capacity. :(

How do you have a max of 240 when you begin the game with a max of 300?

Wasn't the weight of quest items removed in a patch? So.. did you downloaded them all (or at least the latest)?

Good point. My stamina is green at 240. I guess that's not representative of the weight I can carry. Sorry about that. I don't do well with memorizing numbers. Take with a grain of salt. Maybe it's 340?

As for the "they weigh nothing", I'll try this tonight by dropping everything I own to see if I can get to zero. I noticed this last night because I actually did stop in Whiterun to dump quite a bit of stuff (not sell, but to store) and I noticed I couldn't get my carry weight below 90.

I'm assuming it's because of these items:
Grimsever
Hjalti's Sword
Harrald's Steel Sword

Maybe I overlooked a few things of my own.

That's an interesting observation. I wonder if they have a disease or something?

EDIT: Ah, nevermind. :P

Quest items have a weight for physics, but once they enter your inventory, until the quest is over, they weigh nothing. Proven fact. Uesp it.

And your carry weight is not your stamina, look at the number in the lower right part of your items inventory screen, it'll say 197/350 etc, meaning your total capacity is 350 but you're only carrying 197.

Didn't they try this with Other games and still have it bugged? it would be better if they added a "Quest Item Box" in the player homes instead. The box would have Coding that removes the "Quest" tag from the items and makes them storeable. It'd make sense.

Grimsever belongs to a chick named Mjoll (Blonde nord with blue face paint) in Riften if you want to drop it off and get rid of it. Since you already have it, you already completed her little quest thing for you.

Aren't quest items you find before their related quest is started forever stuck in your inventory? At least from what I have experienced.

No idea, that's why I just said the name of the person that sword belonged to and nothing else, even though the OP already knows what dungeon/area it came from, I still left it out.

Indeed, this is starting to become a problem, unlike Oblivion key items in this game do have weight and some of them like the elder scrolls itself is so heavy it can take up almost a quarter of your inventory if your not putting any points into stamina like me.

Thats another problem with this game, with the strength stat gone you cant increase your carry weight as a warrior which is really bogging down all of us heavy armor type people, the only way to do so is to waste points in stamina, a thief type attribute which makes no sense at all, you'd think stronger characters would be able to carry more stuff then skinny people v_v

UESP'd it. It says zero.

I guess I'm left to figuring out where those pounds are going. Dang mammoth cheese. :D

Thanks for the help, guys. Sorry for going a bit overboard.

Quest weapons can be removed by equiping them and placing them on a weapon rack or weapon holder in any of your homes.

Just equip the weapon and walk up to the rack or holder and when you get place weapon with X hit X once, Twice does not matter that quest weapon will be placed in the weapon holder or rack.

They do weigh nothing- that is fact, you can "test" all you want.

You must be packratting something else that is bumping up your weight. If i had to guess i would say potion weight is usually the villan here.

One thing I learned was to not pick up any books from boss chests at then end of dungeons. Only two quest items that stick are Galus' Journal and the Elder Scroll if you perform all quests correctly.

I was surprised that I was carrying around 50 pounds of soul gems one time. Potions too can add up. Each gem and potion weighs 1/2 pound. That these weights need to be changed is a discussion for another thread, but, the fact is, these things do add up quickly.

Oblivion had Quest Items, so did Fallout. With a few items, they would stick in your inventory, but others would be removed or could be dropped, but even most those that did stick, later patches fixed that.

You can get rid of the elder scroll after you are done with it by giving it to a certain someone
