2.4 GB Update on Steam

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:30 pm

Today I bought Fallout New Vegas, installed and tried to start it. But [censored] Steam says " game temporay not available" . So I restarted Steam and an 20 MB uploaded for Fallout started. Afterwards the game was still not available and this time I am forced to download 2.4 GB update which is really not possible with my Internetconnection. What kind of [censored] is this to sell a game with just 60 percent Content on DVD and 40% the users are forced to download. How can this be possible. On package of the Game was just noticed that Internet will be only needed for the activation of the game and not for downloading nearly half of game.

Here I show u what this means for me:
I got ISDN with 6 kbs download speed.

2398,7 MB * 1.024 Kbyte = 2456368,8 Kbyte / 6 Kbyte/s = 409378,13 s = 6822,97 mins = 113,71 hours downloadtime

In the same boat, mate. HughesNet cap at 600MB / day. That's 4 days of downloading if I use my entire bandwidth allocation on just receiving an update. To play a game I bought on DVD.

Steam requires - yes REQUIRES - games to be updated fully before they can be played offline. So anyone who lives outside of a high-bandwidth area, well, they're screwed as more and more patches come out.

Although I am not affected by this issue, I agree totally. I even have an issue with "Requires Internet to Authorize" games. Some folks may just not have Internet on their game machines! Forcing a huge download on a game purchased on DVD seems very, Very odd.

You can't even do this one on a DVD. This problem is common with me as at most sites I work there is no electricity, running water, or often little if any cellular coverage so we have to use satellite phones. Gaming in my off time is a pain in my butt. Even though I own the games it makes it really tempting to get a pirated version so I can enjoy it while away from home. My line of work this is by far not something I would do... but still this BS makes it all that much more tempting.

Is this a new patch that came out tonight? 2.4Gb? Someone please let me know so I can get my wife or gf to dl it for me while I am at work.

How else are they going to combat piracy ? I think it was a great move by bethesda. I mean, annoying yes, but smart.

lol u call this [censored] a great move. U cant even exchange the game in shop because u already use the cdkey on steam and so they wont give u your money back. I Mean if they wrote on the package u will need broadband Internet to play this game it would be maybe ok. And to combat piracy the best way is to make a good game so the players will gave the respect to what the editors/programmer did and buy the game because they would like to have such game in future again. But look at the most new games which came out. The are full of Bugs, have very simple story and always same playstyle and no new creative stuff. So many people will think twice if they pay money to be a [censored] Betatester or not. But All in all i got the 2.4 GB patch now and lets see how this game is.

Yeah, this is crap. I'm really sick of the direction that gaming, in particular PC gaming, is going. They punish honest customers while doing NOTHING to really stop piracy. Game companies need to accept that there will always be a way to pirate a game and that there will always be a fraction of the population that pirates and it's pure laziness on their part that they can't find a anti-piracy solution that doesn't screw honest customers.

I bought the digital distribution version and it simply isn't fair that they are charging 49.99 for digital distribution. They save tons on not having to ship or package the game and they pocket the difference. That is ridiculous. Also the fact that you can't sell a DVD copy? I mean, do gamers really want to accept this new standard? I sure as hell don't. This is seriously the last game I am buying for a few years unless I find them in the bargain bin. I'm really sick of this.

So is this a DRM thing or a botched distribution?

This is not related to STEAM or DRM in general. This is because the game is packaged in archives and so buggy they need to fix several packages that can only be shipped intact, therefore huge files with loads of unnecessary/unfixed data that also is send. This is solely on the plate of the devs.

A 2GB patch?..Jesus, I'm wondering exactly what this is going to add to the game, so far it's been mercifully bug free for me, aside from the usual Gamebryo stuff.

Stop complaining. The game was mostly unplayable for me and many others at release. There's going to be more patches - likely this size - shortly that will fix issues with the game. It's regretful that you don't have a fast enough internet connection to compensate for the size (I don't, either. I usually download around 275 kbs/s) but it needs to be understood that these updates are completely necessary for many who, as mentioned, can't play the game entirely.

Hmmm.... all updates I got where a lot smaller. Only if you change the language you got an 2GB update. Maybe a english version which is activated in Germany?

Don't know how big my update was, I did see a popup saying Steam has finished downloading Fallout NV.
I was doing something else and couldn't check it. I did finally get around to playing some last night.
Whatever the update was, it has completely fixed my game that the update before this last one had seriously broken,
All is good now and hopefully it is will remain that way :celebration:

This is somehow funny .... ;D
Think u dont really understand it. We not angry about that they try to fix and work for to improve the game.
We just angry about that they sell us a game which not work. And we cant solve this problem not as easy as you.
