Uploading Mod to Steam Workshop

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:19 am

I'm trying to upload my mod to steam workshop, but the process to do so isn't allowing me to.

These are my files:

interface
meshes
textures
.esp
.ini

These are all of the folders associated with my mod.

The tutorials here didn't help me - http://www.creationkit.com/Uploading_To_Steam_Workshop

Anyone able to help?

I think the workshop only accepts esp's and bsa's

Any material assets outside of the .esp have to be packaged into a .bsa. If it cannot be .bsa'd, then you most likely cannot upload it to the workshop.

I just packed the files into a bsa, but there are two files. BSA and BSL

I also have the esp

When trying to pack the bsa and bsl with creation kit, it is saying it is the wrong file type. I have the esp loaded as my data as well.

The workshop can only use ESP+BSA pairs. Optionally if you have a .ini file matching your ESP name, it will also be picked up. All your files (other than the .ini and .esp) need to be inside the BSA.

How about the BSL file that also is created when archiving?

This is the part were I am having problems

I open creation kit, and load my esp into the data

I go to upload archive to steam.

The "Add/remove files to archive" window appears, with a few files inside that are not part of my mod.

I try to add my bsa and bsl to the drag and drop list, but it gives me an error saying it is not the right file type.

Note - These are the files of my mods currently:

ini file
esp file
bsa
bsl

Thanks all

You can't put a BSA inside of a BSA. That's why the archive tool won't let you do it. It's purpose is to build a BSA. You would only be able to put things like meshes, textures, audio, scripts, and voice files in there.

The ini file, esp file, and bsa file will be uploaded to Steam when you submit the mod through the CK. The .bsl file can be deleted unless you need to use the archive tool to unpack the .bsa at some point. Steam uploads will also generate a .ckm file which you can delete afterward.

How do I submit the mod through CK though? I used the Archive.exe to previously create my bsa file, so I have the ini, bsa, and esp

Side Question: How can I protect any textures I make if they are inside a bsa file? In other words, how can I prevent one for extracting my dds files from my bsa, and altering them for theirselves? Is it possible for someone else to unpack my bsa file?

You can't. Once you distribute the mod, anybody can do what ever they want with it privately. The most you can do is put a "permissions section" on your description page

For uploading In the CK:
File -> Upload Plugin and Archive to Steam
This will bring up a new window which will allow you to add a title, add a preview image, and choose tags for the categories your mod falls under. There should be a button saying Upload. That tutorial image is outdated, as the description is not an option for the upload. Once it says it is published, you must go to your new workshop page to add any youtube videos, screenshots, and description you want for the mod.

The only way to protect your mod from assets being re-uploaded elsewhere is specify in your description on the workshop that the assets cannot be used in any other mods. You probably want to upload a .zip containing .esp and .bsa over at Skyrim Nexus so you also have the same protection over there, since it will be easier for them to track down your assets if such a situation happens.
