USB Flash drive install

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:06 pm

Now that people out there in the world have obtained legitimate copies of the game. Can any of you confirm or deny if installing the game to a USB Flash Drive fixes the texture bug that seems to be plaguing an otherwise perfect game? Or even playing it from the disk. All I've heard is hear say and conjecture. I just want to hear from someone who has played the game first hand. Does installing to a flash drive, or playing from the disk actually help the texture problem on the 360.

I can confirm installing it to a USB flash drive fixes the problem. It works for me, and others. Will it work for everyoine? I really can't say. I went and bought a brand new 8GB USB flash drive to try it though and it worked for me. I do not have the texture issue now. I made a topic about it here which got quite a few posts going in it but that seems to have inexplicably vanished.

Obviously they deleted it. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

Is it allowed? I though installing from USB was illegal?

Is it allowed? Well, when you choose to install the game on your 360 the console actually gives you the choice of whether to install it to the HDD or USB Memory. If it wasn't allowed then surely they wouldn't give you the choice...

Not installing from a USB drive--installing it to one. 360 can now use a USB flash drive as a memory unit.

I've just tried both methods and I've discovered that, on my copy at least, playing without installation causes no texture problems initially.
After around 15 minutes or so or whenever a new cell loaded the texture issue would crop up once again. Some textures are stalwart in how fantastic they look (with or without a HDD installation) but a vast majority of them are really suffering.

We shouldn't have to install a game to a USB drive in order to see the game as it was intended either.

I'm really grateful people have found a temporary solution to these texture issues but I really do hope Bethesda come up with a proper fix soon.

Taking a small break from the game to confirm that playing from the USB flash drive has no problems, at least not for me.

How do you install to a flash drive?

Follow these instructions to format it for use with 360:

http://support.xbox.com/en-gb/xbox-360/how-to/usb-flash-drive

Then when you go to install the game, simply select the Memory Unit instead of the HDD

How big is the install file?

3.8Gb but the Xbox 360 grabs about half a gig when you format it so 4Gb USB drive will not be big enough

So...this works? (I haven't got my game yet, though, I have a 8GB USB just incase playing off the disk causes textural issues).

Going to pick up skyrim in a couple of hours, I have an 8gb USB drive prepped ready for installation...

I don't normally run games from disc, mainly to preserve the DVD drive to avoid red ring of death, the xbox runs quieter and I have 250gb super elite, so why not?

I would suggest that if you have tested the usb install then report back with your findings, also include what Xbox version you have... Also note whether you previously ran from disc or HD...

Let's actually help bethesda resolve this issue as soon as possible!

I second that. Complaining doesn't help solve anything. I found a 16GB USB stick so i'll give that a shot in a few hours and report back.

Likewise. Unless, of course, I have little to no issues playing from the disk itself. :disguise:

Help them? I made a topic about this yesterday saying that the USB install worked for me, how I had preivously been running it, what I had tried, where I had the issues, even what version xbox I'm on. It was deleted overnight....

Yeah... Viggy, full credit to you for first finding this solution... Not sure why your thread was deleted, maybe someone (not in the know) thought it was illegal and the knee jerk reaction was to remove it?

But still, your solution not only helps Bethesda it also helps the community and that is the important thing!

Can you repost your findings? Currently I'm playing from a 16gb flash drive and I'm having the problem. Although I am playing from a file that had the problem previous to installing to the flash drive. Will I have to start from scratch with a clean flash drive installation to have it work?
