I always power-play the first time around, role-playing can be done after it once you get the hang of the game. (power-play, use best gear. role-play, use crap gear that looks cool)

As always community mods are going to address this, giving you all manner of item in the long run. For now I see your point, just look at the Archmage's Robe versus any other caster option in the game. There's really no comparing.

In my opinion, for the most part the better the gear, the better it looks. I'm wearing full plate steel which is the best I can currently find (at level 26), and I think it looks awesome.

The difficulty slider can be adjusted so that you are still effective in combat regardless of what you wear.
