Using mouse in dialogue and menus

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 6:13 am

I don't know if all users are experiencing this problem exactly as I'm about to describe it, but I do know that some users are, from what I have seen on other forums.

There seems to be a problem with using the mouse in dialogue menus with NPCs and the inventory/spell selection menus on the PC. Most of the time, when you go to select a response/item/spell, the mouse will highlight the option when you hover it over the one you wish to select, but when you click on it, it ends up selecting the wrong option. Before you suggest to deselect the "360 controller" option in the Game Options menu, I have already done this, and it behaves the exact same way whether that option is enabled or not.

This is as precise a description of the problem as I can give, and I apologize for the redundancy. I'm trying to be as clear as possible about what it seems to do:

When you use the WASD keys to move the highlighted selection to another one, it seems to work precisely as it was intended. The WASD keys allow you to select an option and the highlighted text turns both white and becomes enlarged. Then, when you press E, it selects it. I'm assuming this is the native method, because apparently this TES game is ported to the PC from a console version, rather than the other way around.

When you try to use the *mouse* to make a selection, however, it will highlight the selection beneath your mouse in white, but the text *does not enlarge*. It seems as if whatever selection was originally both *highlighted and enlarged* when you first open the menu or initiate dialogue with an NPC, or the one that you last selected using the WASD keys, remains enlarged, even though the selection beneath your mouse cursor becomes highlighted in white.

In other words, when you move the mouse over the desired selection, the text beneath your mouse cursor turns white, but the text beneath your mouse *does not* enlarge. The text that was originally selected when the dialogue/menu was opened stays enlarged, and no matter what you click on with the mouse, it confirms your selection as being the *enlarged* (not highlighted in white) selection.

-

So, for example, if you pressed Tab, and selected "Items" with the mouse, and the highlighted selection is already on "Weapons", the "Weapons" text is both highlighted in white, and enlarged.

Without using any keys, if you try to select another option, like "Potions", when you move your mouse over "Potions", the word "Potions" turns white. The word "Weapons" is still enlarged though, even though it is now grey.

When you *click* on the word, "Potions", it actually thinks you selected "Weapons", and opens the "Weapons" sub-menu. It *should* have selected the "Potions" sub-menu, but it doesn't.

It only selects whichever option is still *enlarged* (even though it is grey in color) text when you click, no matter which option you have highlighted in white beneath the mouse cursor, no matter where you click on the screen.

As a result, those of us who are experiencing this problem are *forced* to use the WASD keys to navigate the "Items" and "Magic" menus, and in NPC dialogue, because this problem renders it practically impossible to use the mouse to make selections.

I am running the game at 800x600, with graphics settings at Med/High. Neither changing the resolution, nor changing any of the advanced graphics options helps at all.

Again, we are experiencing this problem whether the "360 Controller" setting is enabled or not. No other setting in the "Game Options" menu helps, either.

I do not have a controller plugged in to the computer, and no matter what, it always behaves the same way in those menus, no matter what settings I use.

This is incredibly frustrating to us PC users with this problem, and we have been able to use the mouse properly for every single TES game prior to Skyrim, so it's not something we should expect or have to just "deal with".

I'm not a programmer, but I don't understand why we're now in patch 1.5x and this is still a problem.

I've tried to explain the exact nature of the problem as accurately as possible, so that a technician can re-create this problem on the PC and see what I'm talking about.

Hopefully we can get them to fix it themselves, instead of relying on a 3rd party mod to fix it.

Problem is they used flash and it doesn't care for "mouseover" when clicking. You can even activate the last selection by clicking right in the middle of nowhere. I tried to get used to WASD, but being a generic PC-Player I tend to use the mouse most of the time. Couldn't find a mod that fixes it.

Save early, save often... and reload when it failed again.

Very annoying!
