Using Oblivion in college courses

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 4:01 pm

I am a professor at a university that is going to be using TES IV in a college course I am teaching. Is anyone out there doing anything like this? Or know of anyone doing this?

Interesting. What is the course? Will the students be required to play the game or will you simply teach them about it?

The course will be titled "Elements of Game Design, and How to Remove Them".

We talk about Skyrim in nearly every meeting of my game design class

I know this is a joke, but... Just because you don't like the elements, or because they didn't work, doesn't mean they aren't there.

Well, yea, I got that, but there were design decisions behind those cuts (that or lack of time/money/workforce).

Lack of time/money/workforce seems more likely. I can't fault the good marketing choices of adding voiced acting but if Beth would have had more money... what a game it could have been!

Okay for real. I am a professor in Wisconsin teaching a course called "Cultural Studies/Gaming" I am using Oblivion for the text because the cost is reduced not that I don't want to use Skyrim, but this is a new course that is right now on trial so to speak and I want to make sure it will work before having students buy the newest game. So part of my reason for getting on here is trying to find likeminded individuals, but also I cannot seem to get ahold of anyone in Bethesda. Other than an automated reply, which was ridiculous!

I was referring more to things like the look of Cyrodiil, the number of armor slots, level scaling, etc. Those are the things people typically object to.

PM Gstaff or Nick Breckon on these forums. They're the community managers, and should either be able to answer your questions or put you in touch with someone who can.

So college kids are getting college credit for a course in "Cultural Studies/Gaming"? That's...unorthodox and disturbing.

I took a course called Aquatic Fitness, one with weight lifting, and another that was just Tennis. They did not apply to my major at all, but they helped me maintain status as a full-time student, as required by my loans. :shakehead:

Now I attend a school much better than ISU and I every course applies to my major and minor. Btw they are Game Art & Design, and Media Arts & Animation. so... if I were to take such a titled course, it wouldn't be unorthodox. And it is disturbing to be in a field where people fail to notice its impact on society (however potentially negative it may be) as well as the economy.
