Using the Wii as more than a dust-collection device

Post » Wed Sep 12, 2012 9:37 am

Last year for Christmas we bought our oldest daughter (6) a used Wii with a smattering of games. Most of the games are the usual child-oriented games and don't really hold her (or our) interest. As such, the Wii generally just sits on the entertainment center and gathers dust (we don't feel she's old / responsible enough to put it in her bedroom).

What are some good games to check out that we can all sit around the family room and play together as a family? We've about had our fill of Wii Sports and Sonic & Mario At The Olympic Games (Winter & Summer versions).

We've never really gotten in to the system, so I'm hoping we can breathe some life into it with a few solid titles we haven't played. I, for one, have always wanted to play Smash Bros. or Mario Party, but never have. Are those worth a look?

Any suggestions would be helpful. But if you're just gonna come in and say what a horrible console the Wii is or how you can't stand Nintendo, go find another thread to do it in.

TL;DR: Wii games to play as a family, suitable for children under 7 & enjoyable for advlts as well.

Dangit, there goes my suggestion for No More Heroes.

Well you've got Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

Zack and Wiki might be a good one, it's not a multiplayer game, but it is a rather good puzzle game. Some of the later puzzles get rather tough though.

LoZ: Twilight Princess
LoZ: Skyward Sword
The Last Story
Resident Evil 4
Monster Hunter Tri
Red Steel 2
No More Heroes 2
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Smash Bros Brawl

Best games on Wii, IMO. Only last two are okay for families though.

If she can read, try Animal Crossing.

Actually we don't. I need to catalog the games we do have. We have about 25 of them, but none of the "big" titles. They all came with the system, which we picked up dirt-cheap off a family friend last year.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

See if she loves her Daddy.

Yeeeeah... Not gonna fly. Any time I put anything on TV, her first question is "Is this violent, dad?". She's a gentle soul, that's for sure. We were watching Jurassic Park 3 a few weeks back, and she started crying when they used the baby T-Rex as mommy bait. "But heeeeeee's just a baaaaaaaaaby!"

She snuck out of her room after bedtime last night while I was watching True Grit. Just as Rooster was putting the bullet through that guys face in the cabin. Yeah, she cried for an hour straight and couldn't go back to sleep after that...

The newest Mario Party is very different from previous titles, I don't really like the changes.

The Mario games are sure fire hits with the Family. I can't tell you how many nights are spent sabotaging teammates in SMB and laughing our asses off!

My wife loves Animal Crossing, it would be something fun for your daughter though I believe it's single player.

Mario Kart is amazing.

Super Mario Kart Wii

I played that game for hours.

Most of the Wii's games that are really good aren't family friendly.
