Valtheim Towers & Robber's Gorge (Archery)

Post » Wed Oct 24, 2012 12:18 pm

Before my current patch of 1.05, I would kill it at archery. Even at that time, I had 100 archery with all perks unlocked.

Nightingale bow. Ebony or Daedric arrows.

From the vantage point of the two pictures bellow, I could snipe bandits off their respective bridges (even as far as the opened eye in the bridge at Valtheim. Actually, the picture of Valtheim is not exactly accurate...I would have been a little further back. Between the big rock you see on the right, and a smaller rock you can not see that would be on the back left.

Valtheim

Robber's

Since patch 1.05, these shots are close to impossible...if not impossible.

With all the crazy stories I hear concerning archery and patch 1.07, you probably look at these shots and say "No f'ing way!".

I have no problems with those shots.
Yes sometimes I do miss but those shots aren't all that hard.

I call shenanigans.

Maybe the Robber's Gorge picture, but I highly doubt the Towers picture and the description I gave.

Btw, I am on PS3. No mods.

Are you on XBox or PC? I'm on a PC and I had make some changes to the options to make long arrow shots. By default, collision detection range is shorter than draw range, so that being able to see your enemy does not mean you can hit him.

If you are playing on XBox, try getting slightly closer to your target, maybe the range was changed in 1.5

You just have to know the tragectory of your bow and aim accordingly.
That shot at Voltiem towers can be done with a hunting bow, just aim several feet higher then your target.

At first it took me quite a few shots to get it right but it can be done.
Also the aim right/left has to be very accurate as well,at that range anything off will miss.

Maybe I shouldn't have said I don't have problems with them but I can make those shots as often as not.
It's not a shot I would use a poison on.

Also I am on xbox 360.

I can still make those shots, just not nearly as often as pre 1.05.

Sure, I could get closer...but I am a sniper. And Angry Orc, I have been playing my character for over 600 hours. Almost level 60, and the only thing I ever grinded out was smithing.

I am damn good with the bow.

I don't have much of a problem with shots like this, and that's without the crosshair.

Well I didn't meen to get you upset,It's just that your original post didn't say anything about making those shots before and not making those shots as much now with the 1.05 patch.
I wonder if Dawnguard or Hearthfire has anything to do with this also, since I haven't noticed any changes.

I'm not upset. But, I certainly clarified it in my original post.

Just a failure to communicate. No worries.

Nope, I can make them too, and further. I don't know about PS3, but earlier versions on both XBox and PC were "easier" to aim. Actually, a lot of veteran archers were initially complaining about there NOT being drop, and there wasn't. You aimed spot on with the crosshairs and it was either close enough or too far away for the guaranteed hit. I don't know when this changed, but it did (on PC, anyway, dunno on XBox). You now have to allow some for drift or drop or whatever. Perspective can also be REAL tricky if you're not in 1P mode or if, like at Valtheim, you're aiming angled over ledges. I've grown accustomed to it and just make the shots. Give it some time, you should be able to do the same.

Archery is pretty confusing in Skyrim as the crosschar at short and medium range auto adjust for range but this does not work for long shots so you get a pretty huge drop
