1) Go to the room with the terminal from which you've downloaded the data on plants. Enter the room and turn around. You should be standing inside the room, but close enough to the door to be able to activate it.

2) There will be a gas leak right in front of you, by the entrance to another room which you can see from where you stand. Throw a grenade there to ignite the gas, then immediately shut the door to shield yourself from the fire.

It took me a little while to figure this trick out.

P.S. Wiki entry on There Stands the Grass seems to have been deleted. Weird.

Have you been told to ignite the gas yet? as it sounds like your problem is your trying to ignite the gas leak before Keller starts it.

I don't quite undestand what you're saying. Does the gas not ignite, or do you have difficulty surviving the fire?

If you can't ignite the gas, you may be throwing the grenade in the wrong place. Aim for where you see the air trembling. The explosion should be in the corridor, not inside the room.

I used frag mines my only time I did that quest. But simply closing a door didn't shield me from the blast.
I left a trail of frag mines from the gas to way up the hall until the mines ran out. Shot the first mine and it ran like dominoes until it hit the gas, which didn't seem to be just that little spot, but half the level. To help protect from the blast I took everything in my inventory that had Fire Resist in it as well as some other damage resist chems, though I don't know if the latter helped. I've never died so many times in the game than that vault

If you're having trouble igniting the blast, that's odd. Although, unlike other gas traps in other places I think it takes more than firing your weapon to ignite it. Try a frag mine or frag grenade

You probably didn't close it fast enough. Or you were in the wrong room. Keely explicitly suggests sealing yourself up in one of the rooms as a way of surviving.

I did it with a frag grenade. Time bombs or C4 are probably the best way to do it as they give you more than enough delay.

I had trouble too, had to throw my grenade and close the door then back into the corner, died a few times from standing by the window or door.

I'm with golem on this. It's a perfect place to use C-4, and a time bomb would work nicely

The explosion from the detonated gas will not enter the room near the vents that contains the terminal with the data from the experiments, so if you stand in there and either throw or fire a grenade into the hallway you should be fine regardless of whether or not you closed the door thereto.

I usually bring either a Grenade Launcher or GMG depending on when I do said quest, and use it to fire in the direction of the vents while standing a bit back from the doorway. You'll need to aim to the right in order to not hit the corner between you and the vents if you do it this way, and you'll also want to arc the shot upward slightly as ballistics apply to rounds from these weapons.
