VGA cable question

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 12:31 pm

My daughter has a nice LED tv that I'm looking to hook up as a monitor to a tower we just got. On the back of the tv it says "PC in" and the VGA connection. I'm looking to pick up a decent VGA cable but my problem/question is that they range in price from $7 to $60 and I'm wondering are there better quality cables to justify spending 60 bucks or is it just a rip off like expensive brand name HDMI cables?

Looking to go cheap if it doesnt make a difference is my question....thanks

HDMI is a digital signal, thus there is no degridation over distance and the quality does not matter. Either the 1's and 0's show up or they don't.

VGA is anolog, which does degrade over distance, and the material used does matter as to conductivity, meaning the quality of the signal. Frankly, having said that, I'd go with the cheap option if you're distance is short. (Can always return if it it's sub-par.) I've used a cheap, as in "came with a product" cheap VGA cable in this same way, and it looked just fine. I'm using HDMI now simply because it's less cables with audio being within the same cable.

I'd agree. Even if you did get both the $7 one and the $60 one and compared them side-by-side, you'd probably be hard-pressed to notice a large difference.

Also, don't be svckered in by the outrageously DVI/HDMI cables that claim to be best (Monster). You can go on to Amazon and get a 30 foot HDMI cable for less than $5 that's equally as good as an $80 Monster cable.

Digital signals do degrade over distance. Signal attenuation will weaken over distance. Granted, this most likely won't apply, but cables over 50ft require a extender/repeater.

Oh I'm familiar with Monster cables and quite aware of their over priced products....thanks =)

I'll buy any unknown brand now when it comes to cables
