The folks at QuakeCon have just posted a recording of the fascinating recent panel discussion about VR and AR, and how this will work with DOOM 3 BFG and future titles.
Participating in the panel are John Carmack,Todd Hollenshead, Michael Abrash (former id programmer, now works for Valve), and Palmer Luckey (designer of the Oculus Rift VR headset).
Nice panel discussion. The more I learn about this Oculus Rift the more it blows my mind and peaks my curiosity. Carmack said it himself, this is fundamentally such a simple idea. Just a fisheye lens in front of a cellphone display and a few cheap motion detectors which could have been done five years ago and its real advantage over other systems is just in being cheap, lightweight, and dramatically improving immersion. Luckey got lucky and happened to be the right guy with the right skills and desire at the right time and to top it all off Carmack just happened to be researching the same basic idea at the same time. It's the kind of story Hollywood loves and where it goes from here is anyone's guess.
