Visual Novels

Post » Sat Nov 09, 2013 3:36 am

Recently I've gotten into visual novels. Dysfunctional Systems and Juniper's Knot (yeah, it's not really interactive) were both very enjoyable and I want to know if you fine folks have any suggestions. I wouldn't say I'm picky about subject matter but I would prefer it to have a decent amount of choice.

So, what do you all have in mind?

Edit: I don't own a 3DS or Vita.

Do you have a 3DS/DS? There a lot of good VNs on there.

It's quite an old thread, but the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1352837-visual-novels-thread/ does have some good posts in it worth reading, even if you don't ressurrect it.

The best ones on DS are:
999 (sequel is on 3DS/Vita)
Ace Attorney series (there are 5 on DS and 1 on 3DS)
Ghost Trick

Most of the good VNs for PC are not available in English, but some have fan translations. Some of my favorites are:
Tsukihime
Kanon
Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO

I also heard Ever17 and Steins;Gate are good.

also, apparently an Angel Beats VN is coming out next year, I for one am looking forward to it..

Others may disagree with me, However I think "Key" makes some of the best written, heart touching VNs..

although, others may disagree..

If you don't mind Eroge, there's the Sona Hanabira series, and Alatcha Nacha (Which is unfortunately not translated.) And to be honest, the Sona Hanibra series is hugely lacking in the writing department.

If I recommend any visual novel though, it's Aoi Shiro and Akai Ito. Aoi Shiro is for PC, and is translated. It's fully voiced, has beautiful art (and sprites), excellent music, over 56 endings, six large "paths" to choose from (which have alot of deviations.), a whole lot of choices, and well-written storyline. It's light Yuri, but has no six or H-scenes. Its genre is horror/mystery. The length is around thirty hours.

Akai Ito is in the same universe as Aoi Shiro (It's before it, and was released before it.) Everything about Aoi shiro is in Akai ito (Though the storylines are completely different, it's still light yuri and non-eroge.) Unfortunately, unlike Aoi Shiro, it's only for PS2, and although you can get a translation, it's a huge pain.

Both Akai Ito and Aoi Shiro go into Japanese Mythology and culture, very deeply so I learned alot :D

I personally dont like Clanad to much. I think sucesss makes the best visual novels.

Type Moon put out some good ones. Fate series, Tsukihime, Melty Blood (1st was half vn, half fighting). If you play those you will appreciate the greatness of Carnival Phantasm anime.

Others I enjoyed:

Katawa Shoujo

Narcissu 1 & 2 (Read 2nd first since it's a prequel)

Planetarian

Kana: Little Sister

Infinity Series (Never 7, Remember 11, Ever 17)

Cross Channel

Katahane

Family Project

Kira Kira

Edelweiss

A lot of these you can get from Jast or Mangagamer or are free.

Ah, the one with the "dolls" right?

I thought it was great, alot of political discussions and stuff. Though it's eroge, and is Yuri so it's not for everyone.

And the company who made it went bankrupt.

Yeah that's the one. There really isn't much in the way of ero and it is used to progress the story instead of scenes out of nowhere.
