If you don't mind Eroge, there's the Sona Hanabira series, and Alatcha Nacha (Which is unfortunately not translated.) And to be honest, the Sona Hanibra series is hugely lacking in the writing department.
If I recommend any visual novel though, it's Aoi Shiro and Akai Ito. Aoi Shiro is for PC, and is translated. It's fully voiced, has beautiful art (and sprites), excellent music, over 56 endings, six large "paths" to choose from (which have alot of deviations.), a whole lot of choices, and well-written storyline. It's light Yuri, but has no six or H-scenes. Its genre is horror/mystery. The length is around thirty hours.
Akai Ito is in the same universe as Aoi Shiro (It's before it, and was released before it.) Everything about Aoi shiro is in Akai ito (Though the storylines are completely different, it's still light yuri and non-eroge.) Unfortunately, unlike Aoi Shiro, it's only for PS2, and although you can get a translation, it's a huge pain.
Both Akai Ito and Aoi Shiro go into Japanese Mythology and culture, very deeply so I learned alot
I personally dont like Clanad to much. I think sucesss makes the best visual novels.
