According to the majority of studies I've seen over the past 30 years or so, more than 99% of the world's population IS attracted to the opposite gender. It's a natural instinct that assures survival of the species.

What is Bethesda supposed to do? Pretend they don't know that.?

Many studies show the number much closer to 90%. But we're living in a modern world. Things are likely going to be different in Skyrim, and homosixuality is likely to be displayed differently.

I'm sure that 99% is way off.

Good catch. I think its the TES version of the Lady Killer perk in Fallout 3 (which they made multi-gender versions of in NV). It did strike me as odd that it was only for the opposite six. The game doesn't presuppose heterosixuality though - you can marry any of the available people regardless of their (or your) six.

This is part of my specific field of study, and I would say that the studies you have seen are extremely biased in various ways and do not reflect reality at all. One example of such bias: the US Census only offers a choice of male/female six (misclassified as gender, which is not the same concept of physical sixual identity). The misclassification biases the data anyway, but there is a bigger problem. The choices exclude all the intersixed/transgedered individuals, thus perpetuating the idea that such people are "other" and somehow not worthy of equal consideration when deciding on political voting power and financial resource distribution (the two main categories of federal influence that the US Census is used to decide).

The ethnicity question is the other horribly biased item. Not surprisingly, it changes every 10 years when a new census is done.

The way I understand this perk, it's supposed to enhance your ability to charm the shopkeeper. It's not about you being attracted to the shopkeeper, it's about the shopkeeper being attracted to you. What Bethesda assumes is that most of the shopkeepers are straight - a correct assumption indeed. (But I wouldn't go as far as saying it's 99%...)
